If you're talking about a main circulation pump for your tank and sump, then yes, that pump should run about 5-10x the tank volume per hour. If you don't have a sump then add as many powerheads as you need to get to that figure. Even more than that would probably be better, depending on the corals you keep. SPS's usually require high flow within the tank itself. LPS's and soft corals require less. Whatever you do make sure there is surface agitation to facilitate gas exchange.

I agree with the above comments. Use several smaller power heads to get the total circulation you want. Pointing the power heads at the rocks, or at each other, will create more random/turbulent water flow patterns.

Cap makes a darn good powerhead. Looks just like a Rio ,but a whole lot better construction goes into them! They do cost a little more ,but it's money WELL spent!!!

As for overall flow ,the more the better! I have a 29gal with a 10gal sump. Turnover rate is 42 times per hour. This tank contains some sps corals ,but mainly soft corals. They seem to handle the pounding currents just fine.

Hope ths helped! Happy Reefing!

Thanks for the confirmation. I actually saw some CAP powerheads, but I was concerned that the ad said they were just like upgraded RIO's. I may try the 2200F. It seems to have a good flow rate and a filter attachment on the intake. Something I was worried about since I don't want a powerhead to suck up my fish and livestock due to too much power.

Super Cow the skimmer is NOT taken into the tank circulation equation, only power heads in the tank and any returns from a sump.

I need to get a powerhead for my 125 gallon 72x18x22, and there seems to be conflicting information out there or I am just completely not understanding something. I was reading that you want a powerhead that will circulate your water at least 5x per hour. That would mean 625 gallons/hour for my tank.

Everyone here seems to like Maxijets but they only pump 290gph max. The only pumps that seem to circulate that much water are the RIO pumps but everyone says those are junk. (And my LFS guy says they're okay for some people but you get what you pay for)

Anyway, when books say 5-10x per hour are they referring to the protein skimmer pump as part of the equation? I have a Turboflotor Multi 1000 which comes with the Aquabee pump, but the manual doesn't say how many gallons/hour it pumps. What exactly do I need?

Skimmer pump is not considered in the calculation.

I would also consider a closed loop system if you don't want the powerheads.
