I have spilled carbon in my sump before. Because of the porous nature, it adds to tbe biological filtration. Bob Goemans' book mentions this, so I wouldn't worry about loosing some in the sump.

Danger ,If you have a wet-dry shop vac you can use it,just make sure you take off the filter before you vacuum the water and put it back when you are done!I bought mine from Sears and it has bailed me out a couple of times!!Once my RO\DI tubing broke and I had 1" of water on my kitchen floor.I ran out to the garage plugged it in,and had it all vacuumed up before any damage had ocurred!

I have had a bag of carbon (actually a mylon footie in my sump that has gotten so hard, I cannot get it out. I put it in the area where a sponge was at the time got the sump and water flows through it to the other side. Anyway, I will have to take my whole sump apart to dig it out or when I break the nylon footie alot of the carbon will probably get all over the sump. Is there a water vacuum I can get it out with for an aquarium??? When I turn everything off, and take the water out of the sump to do my water change, I cannot get the last couple inches out to get the junk out. The sump is below my tank so, the suction vacuum does not work.n Any ideas? I really need to get this carbon bag out and it is stuck in an area where where it just fit perfectly when it was soft. Thanks, Pat
