I was at a fish store in Sherman Oaks, CA. the other day and noticed they had a Garibaldi for sale. It was a juvenile, with the blue spots. I was under the impression that you could not capture Garibaldis for aqauarium use. Any thoughts?

You can't capture them in California. I think it may be legal to capture them in Mexico, but I'm not sure about importing them into the US.

Any other feedback?

As far as I know, Garibadi is just the state fish in California alone. If captured anywhere else, Its OK. I doubt if it can be sold in public in CA. Your LFS may not be aware of it, or may think he could get away with it.

I just checked with a friend of mine who got caught with posession of state fish (hehe....he paid a HUGE fine on it, eventhough he claimed that he has no control over his fishing hook on which fish is going to bite the bait). At the time of issueing a ticket, the warden reminded him this fish can not be publicly sold or be kept as pet in a commercial tank. To keep it, you will have to get a license for it.

The bottom line, if you want to buy it, ask your local fish & game first

Garibaldis from california = illegal.
Garibaldis from mexico = legal, providing they are properly documented when they get brought into the country. I'd ask to see the paperwork.

On a different note Chris, good to see you around again, heard you had dropped out of the hobby. You wouldn't still have any of that pink plate coral I gave you, would you? I lost mine this summer.

Hi Charles, I was out of the hobby for awhile. I bought a house and I wanted to keep expenses super-low for as long as possible. I just recently started up a FOWLR tank to house a porcupine puffer my girlfriend has had for 4 years. I decided that this would be a good excuse to get this gold-belly puffer I saw.

So while I'm not into anything reef yet, I will be soon I'm sure.

You wouldn't believe it man. The pink plate was fragged and given to a someone I know. I kept a small portion of it though and it grew into a great big thing all over again. Then I did this new tank and thought I'd try it in there, since there is nowhere for it to go. It had lived in harmony with the porky for the last 1.5 years or however long it has been since you gave it to me. When I moved it over into the new tank, it immediately receded into nothing in the course of 3 days. It was not eaten. I couldn't believe it! I felt so bad. I had grown fond of the slimer.

I see Garibaldi for sale all the time here. The price is usually around $100 at the store that carries it all the time, otherwise it drops down to around $40-$50 in other stores. Kind of an ugly fish as a juvenile if you asked me, and once they get big enough to be as pretty as they are as an adult fish, then they're too big and way too aggressive to keep.

Well I can tell you as an agent, if you think it is illegal to have then pick something else. It isn't worth the trouble or the questions. Would be especially embarrassing for me... Don't do anything I wouldn't do
