Ok, folks, this is one of those neverending debates. But now I'm looking for actual experience here.

How many dose Iodine/Iodide? Have you really noticed a difference? What brand? Anybody dislike it?

I'm keeping xenias, shrooms, yellow polyps, colt, bubble, and torch.

Thanks!

I put in 3ml with water changes in my 50 and my 29.

When I first transfered Xenia into my 29 there was no "pumping" motion. I couldn't figure out how to fix it. I don't know where I heard, but someone said that they need to have iodine/dide to pulse correctly. I put in 3 ml and a day later everything was great.

I slack off every now and then(quite a bit)on adding iodide/dine and it doesn't seem to effect their pulsing at all.

I've been dosing sodium iodide for 6 years. If I had to buy a commercial material, I'd get it from ESV. I personally don't like the idea of dosing Lugols, but many people do.

I've never intentionally stopped dosing to see what might visibly change, but realistically I would not expect any. I dose to maintain NSW levels, and support any organism that wants it no matter how small (even algae), not because some large creature will go belly up without it.

tsmejkal, the search feature turned up 83 hits for "iodine"- you may want to take a gander at those.

I noticed in your topic you ask for opinions and in the post you ask for experience. Well, since i am confused I will offer an opinion. If you add it you need to test for it. I don't know if you know Randy or not, but I would be reasonably certain that he tests for it. Most hobbiest test kits aren't very good for iodine/iodate, so if you add it be sure to get a quality test such as Hach. HTH

Yeah, I've searched this board, read the articles, etc. Most of the hits only incidentally mention iodine. And a lot of them wax philosophical. I'm hoping to hear people's experiences with it. Have you noticed a difference?

I don't mean to confuse anybody with my semantics; allow me to clarify. My experience has lead me to the opinion that one can form opinions based on experience. I don't have enough experience reefing to have an opinion on dosing iodine/ide, so I'm looking for your opinions and experiences.

I dose on a very limited basis. Brand? SeaChem.
IMO, requirements depend on how heavy the tank is stocked, and how often water changes are made.

hi.
Never dose Iodine in my Xenia tanks. No problem (yet) for past 3 years.

Last water change (~10%) was about 4 months ago.

IMHO, if you do regular (reads: weekly) water change, Iodine is not an issue.

Well, you ask for experience, and I have very little. I have had my tank for about 8 or 10 mos now and have always dosed. Again the guy at the LFS told me it was necessary and I being naive belived everything. I dose far less than the bottle says and dose lugols and potassium iodide (about 1/4 - 1/2 the amount,) as I do not skim and it therefore is used up slower. I dose daily instead of one or two big doses a week and dose lugols 4 out of the 7 days of the week. Does it help? How would I know, I have done it from the begining.

Does it hurt? Well, so far I have only lost one coral near the begining and the rest are happy and colurful.

To all of you that add it, do any of you test for it? If not, why not? Do you just dump salt in until it looks right?

As I said I do add it and yes, I tested for it a few times but have since stopped. The results were good (though a little on the slight side.) I figure if there is still so much debate in the industry as to weather or not it is even necessary then it is fine to dose a bit too little. If I were trying to keep it at the high range then naturally I would test weekly.

I dose a product called Seachem Reef Plus which contains iodine among other things. I put in 1/8 the recommended dose.

I do this because I have hermits and believe the iodine necessary in the molting process and I do not do water changes.

Steve...
if you actually knew how I maintain my tank you would scream. A small tank should be more suceptable to changes than a large one but in my 37 gallon, I do the following .....

0 water change (maybe 10% every 3 months)

add molybedium and strotium when I feel like it at 1/8 recommended dose

test water parameters when I am about to add something

test calcium every 3 weeks or so

test alkalinity when I stop at lfs

tank should have imploded by every rule of reefing but is thriving instead. I just either have a good balance/diversity or am the luckiest SOB alive

I dose Seachem iodine at 2ml once a week in my 55. I house BTA anemones, xenia, shrooms, and star polyps. They all seem to appreciate the iodine. My xenia is growing quickly and pulsing like crazy. The anemones are splitting constantly,as well as the shrooms. The polyps are spreading like a western wildfire. I only dose kalk, iodine, stronium and trace elements(including vitamins).

I thought about adding iodine but first wanted to test for it to see if it was necessary. The Seachem test kit that I got was very difficult to use and read. It is not like other kits where you just add some drops to tank water and compare colors. It had to be calibrated with a control solution which I could not get to work. Maybe the chemicals were old or I'm just an idiot, but I gave up on it. I just do a 10% water change every 3-4 weeks.

I do not test for it, I feel that most iodine tests are not reliable. But if it will help you sleep at night and you want to test for it I'm sure some people on this board know which is the most reliable test kit.
