I have a 55 gallon that I started 2 months ago. I have about 5 inches of southdown sand and some live rock.

Is it too late to add live sand?

If not how should I add it? My tank has a dozen snails, two dozen hermits, a peppermint shrimp, maroon clown, and yellow watchman goby.

Thanks,
Bob

Do you need more? Sounds like you have a very deep bed already.

I cannot imagine it is ever too late to add some LS (I would love to hear from others if they disagree)! It should only help your tank. Be careful not to stir up your current sand bed too much.

Good luck,

I definitely have enough sand in my tank, but any part of it that is alive got that way from the live rock. So, I doubt there are any "critters" in my sand.

Assuming your rock was truly "live", you have critters in your sand that are multiplying as we speak (you probably already know this)

.

You could easily "seed" your sand bed further by adding more quality live sand or add a detritivore kit from inland aquatics. www.inlandaquatics.com

The kit is going to cost you a lot more than the live sand (unless you live in their neighborhood) and arguably be less effective in the short term. Go with the live sand...maybe 5 pounds.

Good luck!
