Reefs.org is pleased to announce that Steve Tyree will be presenting a live chat on Sunday, June 2nd at 8:00 pm eastern. Steve's talk will focus on lighting of stony corals in captivity. The subject matter will be beneficial to the novice as well as to the advanced reefkeeper. Door prizes will include gifts donated by our sponsor Harbor Aquatics and an autographed stony coral book written by Steve himself. Everyone is invited to participate.

Steve Tyree has been a pioneer in the field of stony corals. He has done extensive hobbyist research on acropora sp, sponges and sea squirts. Steve is also an accomplished author. His published works include Reef Building Stony Corals, The Environmental Gradient, and The Prolifera. Steve is currently doing research on sea squirts and has plans to release a new book entitled The Ascidians very shortly.

Anyone wishing to partake in the chat can access it via #reefs IRC. Instructions on how to log on and create a name can be found at: http://www.reefs.org/access/index.html

Thank you for your interest.

The practice never really left. It's sometimes hard to get speakers for #reefs. I'm glad to see another talk is scheduled! :)

I didn't know there was a way to "hear" someone unless you had special software, microphones, and speakers. How does this work. By the way, I have been on #reefs and found it very boring, but everybody was typing not talking.

Well, I havn't found chat sessions very helpful due to the number of people available at any given time that may have an answer. I thought this might be something different and maybe better.
How does it work, he just gets on and starts typing or is there a prepared presentation and then questions?

cwa46,

Yup, that's pretty much how it goes. You log onto #reefs on X-Net using one of the various clients (I like mIRC) and once the talk/chat commences the channel operators close down the ability for all but the speaker and the channel operators to post to the channel. The speaker will then present their talk/chat and when he/she is finished the channel operators open the floor to questions that are sent to the designated channel operator. The speaker will then answer any and all questions posed to him/her. Once the Q&A session is done, the channel operators then open the channel to general chat where everyone can again talk. Usually at the end of the chat there are door prizes as well.

We have a library of the previous talks hosted on #reefs at the following URL to give you an idea of how they work:

http://www.reefs.org/library/talk.html

It should be a fun time. Stop by and check it out. :)

Anyone know of a good IRC client for MAC OSX? Preferably freeware?

Thanks one and all (and especially Steve!) for stopping by. The talk was quite informative, and some very good questions were asked during the Q&A. Over 80 people attended, and BobSlob and JasonD were the lucky winners of the doorprizes. The talk log will be posted in a few days. Stay tuned for future talks in #reefs!
