Do you think 300watts would be to much for 50 gal

yes.but it really depends how drastic cold temp change in your house.
most of the time, heating is not an issue, its cooling.

I have the 300w version on my 65g w/20g sump.

Not quick or large temp changes. would use it for 30 gal with 20 gal sump
