I want to mount my Iwaki WMD40RXLT pumps to the back wall of my stand. The easiest/cleanest way to do this is to bolt the mounting plate (on the base of the pump) directly to the back wall. This would mean that the mounting plate would be oreinted vertically (as opposed to the normally horizontal position). I can't see why this would be a problem, but it can't hurt to ask.

hi.
Can't you make a shelf with two L-brackets and a piece of wood?? Beside, you may have a problem with a "sounding board" effect if you mount the pump directly on the back of the stand.

Ask the tech in Iwaki and make sure that the bearing on the impeller is designed for both hortzonal and vertical mount. Mounting the pump vert. may cause premature failure on the impeller due to excessive wear of the cermic shaft on the bearing... but that's just a guess. My last few experience with the Iwaki techs were very nice.

I could, but this would give me a much weaker support then connecting directly to a piece of wood (or a piece of metal angle iron) connected between the top and bottom of the stand. I will probably use rubber pads between the connections to isolate vibrations.

The pump will still be horizontal, not vertical. In other words, the pump will be turned on its side. So the impeller should not be an issue.

hi.
Oh, I see. Sorry about that. I feel that you be able to mount it "side way" without any problem.

In this image from the back room of the Penn State Aquarium, you can see an Iwaki MD70RLT mounted vertical in a closed loop. They actually used 4 or 5 of these pumps mounted this way in closed loops.
