I was thinking of changing my MH lights from 65000K to 10,000K bluelines. I currently am running 2-250W 6500K MH with 2-160W Super Actinic URI VHO'S. I was wondering if by changing to the 10,000K's they might run a bit cooler. Is my assumption correct or not. The 6500k' s put out alot of heat and I am praying not to have to buy a chiller. I have had them up now for about 9 months and my reef stays about 83deg when they are on. Any suggestions would help.
Thanks in advance
Joe

stick with the 6500k's. the heat issue is negligable. besides, your temp is fine. just keep it below 85.

hmmm, am I missing something here?

250 watts is heat, Kelvin is COLOR temperature , you ain't gonna change the heat out put of a bulb by changing the color of the bulbs....[/b]

Consider the PAR being lower on the higher kelvin bulbs and it would make sense. Worth looking into....

The heat will be pretty much the same.
The 10,000K Bluelines are VERY blue, more like 12,000K. If that is the effect you want, go for it. Just remember, they will not be as bright.

The 6500k bulbs will have a better PAR rating and the 10-12k bulbs will have a better look IMO. But if you are accenting the 6500ks with actinics I would stay with the 6500s.

I would not use the bluelines or the 12K ALS. See Sanjay Joshi's article in the latest Marine fish and reef annual for a breakdown on these lights. They are dim, and don't supply a broad spectrum, IMO. Much better is Ushio, if they come in 250s. Another one was favorably rated in the article I wasn't familiar with, something like Aquiline Buschke.

At any rate, the temps are not going to be different to warrant a change, I don't think.
