Depends on your system, you keeping a low light FOWLR or a high energy SPS reef crest system? or maybe something in between....

Different systems have very different calcium demands.

right now I have a FOWLR system but want to trans to reef. SO basically would rather spend the money now instead of having to upgrade my system later

As long as you've spent the money on proper lighting, skimming, water circulation and books, then go for it, but IMO all of those are much more important to have before a reactor.

Yeah I'm good in all those areas. I just need some recomendations on the different reactors. I not looking to break my wallet here so lets keep the recomendations to under 500

IMO, you may want to wait out on the reactor yet. Test your CA level now. Chances are reactor are not needed 5 months down the road unless you are getting into calcium hungry clam, sps or LPSs. Even if you are into those, regular water changes usually supplies adequate CA for you.

Personally, I liked Kalkwasser reactor more than Ca reactor. It's for slightly different application, but it is enough for me coupled with regular water change.

How large a tank?

if it's approxiamately 60-75 gallons, you might wanna consider a 2 part soluation for you Ca/Alk requirements.

Or....you can always build a Ca reactor.

Or....have you checked out myReef. As I recall, Ca reactor single chambers for $120 !!

I got tired of adding B-ionic every day! I figured that I would have a reef tank for a long time, so it was a good investment. I bought a K2R reactor and except for a few minor issues, it works great. My calcium is steady at about 420ppm and my ph is very stable. It did cost more than $500 though.
