Picture of my Lawnmower Blenny

I know that if you put two together they will pretty much kill each other. Here's a picture of my guy coming up to the top of the tank to get his spirulina treat...his favorite!
and him dancing in front to get my attention

Hey Lynn that's a great picture of your blenny eating from your hand. I need to see if I can teach mine to do that. I probably won't have too much luck though because any time I stick my hand in the tank my purple tang is right there front and center.

Tonytooth, sorry I can't help you with the aggression toward other blennies or gobies as I don't have any others. My blenny is a model reef inhabitant though with the fish I do have. Regal Angel, Purple Tang, royal gramma, banghai cardinal, two damsels. My guess is a 180 should keep him fed if he doesn't have a lot of competition and you have quite a bit of live rock. As soon as you let some algie film on your glass you'll have a bunch of blennie lip marks. Any macro algie will be dust. My blenny wiped out any hint of hair algie in my tank but I've heard mixed reports from others. Good luck.

OK, I'm a sucker for these fish... I'm staying away from the petstores for a while!LOL
I couldn't help myself, today at the PS I saw the tiniest little lawnmower blenny ever! It's the size of a guppy!! You wouldn't believe how cute it is!! He's head in half the size of my baby fingernail! I just HAD to get him and I put him in a 5 gallon QT. I'll put him in my 180 and leave "Rocky" in the 200

That pic of the blennie coming out of the water to take the food from your hand is awesome. How many times did you have to try to get this pic?

I had one adult algea blennie. He never ate a thing a disappeared within a month. They are cool as hell and I am tempted to try another.

Would a juvenile have a better chance of surviving?

Thanks, they really are the neatest fish! Rocky was about 3" max when I got him a year ago. I had him in a 20 gallon for about 4 months and there it seemed he wouldn't take anything except algae off the glass and rocks (I had a fair bit) I noticed though at times, he would sample foods floating past him. I starting wedging spirulina tablets in the rocks really tightly (about the size of a dime) As he was going around grabbing mouthfuls of algae he came across the tablets and really started to go to town on them. Eventually I moved him into the 180 and he would kinda dance in front of the glass and everytime I saw him do this I'd drop in a tablet. Pretty soon he was coming up to meet it. Finally I'd just hold it in my hand until he got pretty close and then drop it, everytime I'd make him come a little closer. Then I left it on my hand and he had to rest on my palm if he wanted it. I was a proud fish owner I'll tell ya! Calling myself a fish trainer! When I had to move him from the 180 to the new 200 I actually caught him in my hand. That was a mistake, because now he's afraid to come up to it anymore
Anyways sorry for rambling. I would try a smaller one...not more then 3" preferable even a smaller and start introducing him to different foods right away. Don't give up, cuz it takes a while.

It is now day three and my blenny hasn't touched a thing. I have alge in the tank and he is just sitting out front showing no interest in eating. How long does it take for them to start eating algae?

Mine started in on the algie right away. Morming after I put him in there I noticed a lot less. Three days later my live rock was cleaned of totally. Hope he eats for you soon.

Tonytooth, he should be nipping on the rocks and glass almost right away. If your cleaning your glass everyday then don't, let the film build up a bit for him. How old is your tank?

I upsized from a 55g to a 180g about 2 months ago. The 55g was running for 5 years. I put everything in the 180 plus more. This is day four and he hasn't touched a thing. I have been cleaning the glass. I am going to take your advise and not clean it. I was going to do that but I have so much nice green stuff on the rocks I thought he would chomp this up. I am getting worried now. He seems happy but he won't eat.

i've got one, too - his name's muddy (as in muddy mudskipper). i used to feed mine nori and seaweed selects but i kinda forgot to for a couple of days and noticed he was still plump as can be. in fact, he's a porker. his belly gets so big that he falls to one side when propped on his fins... :lol:

Hey...I just wanted to let you guys know that my blenny started eating algae. I noticed that his belly was fat and I hadn't seen him eat anything. I knew he had to have eaten with a stomach like that...well I finally saw him chompin on the rocks yesterday. Today he was chompin on the glass. I should be good for a while but I need to get him to eat prepared food so he doesn't starve when the algae is gone. Also my mandarin jumped out last night but I don't think the algae blenny had anything to do with it. You win some...you loose some!

I've got a 46 gallon with 75 lbs of live rock. I own an algae blenny (my first fish!) and i love him as much as you guys do yours. Such an entertaining fish.

Do you think I could keep an escenius bicolor in there as well? I saw a great one at the LFS the other day. I know it's not a good idea to keep two algae blennies together, but since the algae and the bicolor are of different genii, would it be okay? Thoughts, personal experience?

I kept my lawnmower with a pair of watchmen gobies and a jawfish and then added a bi-color (6 mths later) the bi-color was a lot smaller but kinda bullied my lawnmower around. Not enough to separate them...but it bothered me a bit. After I lost the bi-color (ich) I didn't replace him. I've mostly read where they get along fine though.
