getting a new tank and was thinking of not putting in sand. Can clams go on a bare bottom? If not I've seen in pictures of them placed on rock. What I'm getting at is anyone doing this or should I not put clams in this tank.
I guess you could if you propped them up with some rubble rock. I cant for the life of me figure out why you would want to lose all of the benifeits of a sand bed though. e.g. added filtration, micro organism sanctuary and buffering capabilities.
Tri. sp. clam will be fine without sand. My 8" T. derasa is attached onto a piece of live rock, for example.
For some high flow tank, it is better to not having any sand. They will be blown all over the place whenever the surge device comes on. But as goldenboy said, keep in mind the benefits of sand bed before deciding not to have it, especially if your flow is not that high.
