I am going to buy a 29 gallon reef tank w/Fiji live rock & 2-3 fish, and aragonite sand and coral. Would a sea clone skimmer alone do the trick for filtration? How about a Skilter? Some say Skilters are good and some don't.
Any suggestions?

thanks! Where can you get those models at a good price? I found the sea clone on drsfostersmith.com for $69, which I believe is a great deal. I went to my local shop today and saw it for $100.

I am running a seaclone (modified w/airstone) and a cpr on a 55 gal. I would advise avoiding both of them if I were you. Spend the money and get a good one that will actually pull organics out of your H2O as opposed to just airating the water.

really? I had heard that the sea clone was good. You said to get a good one that will pull organics out of the water. Any suggestions?

IMO, the seaclone is a waste of good money and plastic. My first skimmer was a seaclone, boy what a dissapointment.

I have the bac pac and it works great. I have also had the seaclone and its terrible like the rest said its terrible. Some people complain about the bac pacs, i have not done any mods to it, but if you are having trouble with it you can add a maxijet and an airstone. I have seen aqua c's in action and they are pretty good.

glinton,
I am running a Remora on my 37 gallon tank. It works great. I've haven't had any problems maintaining excellent water conditions. I would buy it again if I were to do it over. I've heard not so good feed back on the Sea Clones (never owned one and don't understand what exactly the problems are.)

I like the Remora especially because I can put the heater right inside of it -gets the heater out of the tank.

Problems I've had: Had to get a bubble box - the bubbles never went away. And, I had to modify the bubble box to get it to install well. The other thing was that the collection cup warped. I spoke with the manufacturer and they offered to send a new cup and lid.

my $.02

i've read many times, how bad sea clone's are and most of the time it's by people who have never used them. I've had mine for a couple years and it works fine just as it came out of the box. However,I do NOT use the sponge that came with it and it pulls dark soup regularly. the main thing is to set it right so you don't move the water flow too fast, that causes lots of bubbles in the tank and little actual skimming. would I buy one again? not if I believed what I read on this discussion page, and if I could afford a berlin I'd probably buy one of those but my budget isn't what some are, and I don't own a store so I buy what i can afford at the time that will get the job done. I also add that SKILTERS really are CRAP!!! I had one of those for about an hour. TOO LOUD!!!!! .

Thanks everyone for your input. This can be a very confusing hobby with so many different opinions. I am new at this and trying to research it out before i move on.
About the Remora, can you get those for under $100?
What about the Prizm? I can get one for around $69.
Thanks again.

Hmmm... ....if you read this thread it sounds like a few former SeaClone OWNERS are giving their opinion here...

I've owned a Seaclone too (years ago). I've also owned some of the better stuff out there. SeaClones DO in fact, pale in comparison. EVERYONE I have known, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, who's owned a SeaClone eventually tossed it in favor of something better. I got mine working better with some mods, but it's just a poor design. You can get it to work, yes, but for just a few bucks more there is much better stuff out there. I would never recommend that someone buy one. My opinion...

Not new - you may be able to get a used one for under $100. Check the "For Sale" forum here and at other boards. You could also try eBay.

Lowest I've seen them new is about $75.

FWIW, you pretty much get what you pay for with skimmers. Spend a few bucks more for a good one - it will be well worth it down the road.

i had a seaclone and from my own experience, i had nothing but trouble with it. i always had problems with it spilling too many bubbles or not working at all. it was always getting clogged and i was forever cleaning it. i even tried the modifications hoping to get more from it but had no luck. thanks to some fairy godfathers :D , i now use a remora. very nice skimmer so far. had some trouble with bubbles at first but they have gone away. i'm very happy with it.

Is a Prizm worth the money?

I have no personal experience with the Prizm so I can't comment. I've heard from an LFS that I trust (who stocks/sells Prizms, Bakpaks and Remoras) that they are not as good as a Bakpak. One thing I like about the Bakpak and the Remora is that you can put your heater in the outlet compartment (getting it out of the tank). Best of luck with your tank.
