How is this accomplished. Does one actually go out and crush a piece of garlic and allow the food to soak in it with water or what? Is there an actual product that has already had the food soaked in? What is the process by soaking the food? :?:

Got mine from nutrition supplement store. Its called Kyolic and is water base.
Simply mix with the fish food in bulk, put in the freezer and break of the required amount during feed.
Its good as a regular nutrition for immune system boosting against infection and ick. IME, not useful as a treatment.

cheers

Kent makes a garlic supplement as well. Don't know if it's any different than anything else.

I make my own. I use a hand garlic press and crush 3-4 elephant garlic cloves. Add 1 cup of cool water, shake or stir well, strain to retain liquid, then pour into freezer ziplock baggies. Freeze in a flattened out position to make it easier to break off bits. I also reuse the cube trays the frozen fish food comes in and make garlic ice cubes. I add one garlic cube to one cube of fishfood, allow both to thaw and mix well. Allow mix to sit for at least an hour befor feeding to the fish. If you make your own fishfood, you can reduce the amount of water added to the garlic and add directly to the food mix prior to freezing.

I soak my tangs' nori in kyolic garlic extract and liquid vitamins(Selcon) with a little water. I drench pieces in the mixture and let them dry overnight and feed within a week.

Fishfarmer has the right idea because IME, the idea here is to get as much garlic into the fish as possible. So, feed only garlic extract soaked foods and feed ofter.
If the fish already has ich feed for 30 days even if you see the ich disappear as part of the cycle is that the ich will fall off and a tomont form will reappear. This wont happen if you continue the garlic extract feeding for that period of time.

Call me lazy, but i bought the capsule forms, and just break one into the tank every day, when i first see ich. Fish instinctivily go and eat anything that is floating by them.

Treats the whole tank this way.

I second using the Kyolic extract. I just put about 4 drops in the food I am giving the tank. Let is soak in for about 15 minutes then feed the fishies.

aesop, I thought there are usually bunch of things non-garlic packed into the capsul as well?

Dan,
I have a bottle of "Natural Garlic Oil" capsules. The ingredients listed are: "Vegetable Oil, Gelatin, Glycerin, Garlic Oil." I suspect everything but the Garlic Oil and perhaps, Vegetable Oil, are components of the capsule shell.

I take one of these everyday and haven't had Ich in years!:D

I havent actually read the ingredients (I might have before I bought it) but never had a problem with the capsule version. I suspect that anything that is in the powered form will probably be similiar in the liquid form (preservatives etc).

Plus it was cheaper by a few bucks ahahhha....

hi,

well i tried the "kyolic liquid garlic" and yes it worked, but as soon as you stop feeding the ich came back :(

so i went and got myself "Kick-ich" from rubys reef works wonders...

did as told on the bottle and all the ich went away... i did not have any corals add the time but i had invertebrates and they all made it...

-madmax-

by the way...

the bottle said 'safe for all fish, corals and invertebrates'

I prefer to use garlic, but, I have had success using Kick-Ick as well in my reef tank. None of my inverts were affected by it that I could tell, but, I still don't like adding the chemicals to my tank. Besides, around here the stuff sells for about $30 bottle that only lasts through one to two treatments on my 55.

i third (or fourth)? the use of kyolic... i get mine at the local GNC. add 10-20 drops a day at feed time (not just as a treatment for ich). i started using it to clear up ich - and never stopped - but i've had healthy fish since then (no ich) - 2 years ago!

Thank You for all the replies. I tried the method with using crushed garlic and my fish are looking great. I had one percula that was in the beginning stages of getting ich and it has all gone away. I am still thinking of purchasing the Kyolic, but have not gotten to it since the crushed garlic method seems to be working great. :P

good news! over the long run you'll love the kyolic (once you get it) it's in liquid form so it's VERY convenient - just add a few drops from a seemingly neverending bottle and you're done!
