I think most of the hype about things like goniopora and "bismac" rock being hard to keep is still old-school misconceptions from when most people couldn't keep anything alive(the pre-feeding days I presume).

-Well if this is the case then maybe you can get people such as Eric Borneman and many of the other authors of recent books up to date. All of them advise against purchasing (and some even importing) goniopora. There are also many experienced reefers on this board who feed heavy and still can't keep them alive. The fact is until we know why some reefers (1 or 2%??) keep them alive and others can't, then it makes no sense to continue to kill this animal. The reef hobby has enough PR problems without adding this to it.

One exception to the Gonipora rule seems to be the branching type. There is a big branching Goni at my LFS in a display-only tank that has been happy for years. The owner says he has a huge one at home that is equally happy. There seems to be some huge difference in food requirements, perhaps because non-branching Goni would be found buried in nasty much, much like the elegance. Perhaps the branching variety is more equipped to feed above the nastiness.

I have heard many reports on successful branching specimens, though.

I don't know what I do. It may be what I don't do (maintainance). I really can't kill these things.
