After a couple years my MAG 7 died on me. Being pleased with the first one I had I just ordered another one and replaced the dead one.

At first everything was great but like a day or two later the flow seemed really slow so I checked for obstructions and none were found. I have it going to a spraybar so I pulled that and cleaned it. When I restarted the pump it was great again.............next day flow was VERY slow, barely creeping over the overflow pipes. Checked for obstructions again because I don't use the prefilter but the intake was clean. So I just unplugged the pump and plugged it back in to see what happened........BINGO!!! high flow again. It seems like the pump runs for a day or so very strong then poops out. It has done this a few times now and I can fix it EVERY time by just unplugging it for a second.

What gives??? Any ideas??

Here is a pic of my setup.......maybe it will help. The pic is old but the water return is the same.

I have noticed the same problem several times with mine. Do you use the sponge filter? I don't and just assumed something was caught restricting flow and when you start and stop it it jars it loose. also mine sometimes gets to close to the side of the sump which will restrict water flow in and consequently the outflow.

I don't use the sponge prefilter but I am starting to think I should. I ran my first MAG 7 for months with the sponge on it with no trouble at all.......just got sick of cleaning it off.

I have not noticed anything blocking the intake at all.........that is what has me scratching my head on this one.

Ah the Mag 7. The one I owned would not restart, others have had the same problem as me plus what you are describing Salty. Don't hold me to this but if I remember correctly there was a problem with a burr on the impeller (most likely a defect in the molding process  ). Once this burr is removed the problem seems to be solved.

I have run a Mag 7 for 10 months 24/7 w/ sponge filter on input with no problems yet. :)

The burr has nothing to do with the restart problems. The manufacturer is aware of the restart problem with the Mag7 pump. I have removed the burrs from three Mag7s, because they made a horrific screach, and the two I still own still don't restart. My Mag12 and Mag5 have the same problem. It seems to be hit or miss whether you get a dependable Mag pump.

-Tom, I did not mean to indicate that the burr and the restart problem were the same but rather that the burr might have had something to do with what Salty was experiencing. I am also know that Danner manufacturing is aware of the restart problem, in fact when I contacted them they said that the pump was cavitating and that this was nothing unusual . According to what I am still reading on the boards this is the way they have treated this situation (nothing unusual) and still have not fixed the problem. I don't use their products any longer.

I think it is hit or miss also. A transformer on my block had a blow out on Tuesday and my mag7 restarted when the power came on. Since I plan on adding a second Sea swirl I will probably change to a different pump.

Does anyone have an opinion as to what may be causing the decreased flow I am seeing at random???

It is like the pump is getting tired or something..........it is still running, just not pushing much water.

What would be a good(better) pump to replace this thing with if I decide to go that route??

Steve,

I didn't mean to sound like I was jumping all over your post. Wasn't sure if you thought that the burr caused the failed starts. In fact I think I found out that Danner Mfg. was aware of the problem through one of your old posts. So now I feel like an even bigger dope.

-No problem Tom and you are far from being a dope. I was just hoping to clarify a bit more that the Mag7 seems to have 2 different issues that have apparently not been addressed by the manufacturer.
