Marineland is supposed to debut the new bacteria at the APPMA show in Chicago later this week. The amazing thing is that if Tim H. and Marineland really have discovered a new bacteria that converts ammonia to nitrite, then that means everyone that thought they understood the nitrogen cycle, has had it wrong for say the last 50 years or so. It certainly doesn't speak very well for all the scientists and marine biologists that have been working in product development for all the other companies that sell aquarium additives and such.

I wanted to make some additional comments to my earlier posting. After mentioning that a lot of people misunderstood the Nitrogen cycle, I picked up my copy of "Natural Reef Aquariums" by John Tullock with was copyrighted in 1997. On page 82 John writes "(Most sources credit Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter with playing the key roles in aquariums, but some recent research suggests that this may need further study.) Whatever the bacterial forms at work, they are essential to the process in nature know as the Nitrogen Cycle. This process is crucial to aquarium systems as well.

Congratulations to Tim Hovanic and Marineland for getting the patent and for identifying the correct bacteria.

Dizzy is on the right track. The Nitrobacter vs. Nitrospira (or other) bacteria debate has been around for many years. Look it up. I guess if I had spent many years and lots of money researching bacteria I would want credit for my work too.

hi.
Nobody is discrediting any scientific work or any company. The discussion started as a result when the original poster, who read that a bacteria product can cycle a tank overnight.

As far as I understand, the closest statement by the company to the "is cycled the next day" statement is "maintaining a non-toxic environment from day one" http://www.marineland.com/science/pdf/BIO_Balance.pdf

The testimony by Aquafuture mentions three days, while Tulsa Zoo mentioned eight days. Please read the original pdf for the exact statement.

Had a nice visit with the Marineland rep today. Yes it will cycle the tank overnight to a reasonable stocking level. It is freshwater specific but they are waiting on the patents for the saltwater version which should be coming soon. Public aquariums and aquaculture facilities have been using it (freshwater) for about a year with good success. It's basically designed to get more people into the hobby that will stay in the hobby. Probably not many applications for reef tanks but sounds like an interesting development for fresh and fish only.
