Wizdardgus Gives you good advice.
If you like tangs, choose one from the following:
yellow, purple, black, kole:
Choose one that you see eating. Makes sure it has no red marks or white or black spots. Make sure it is fat (skinny ones often dont survive)and has clear eyes.
Never ever buy a tang from an online store no matter what the price because you cannot see what you are buying.
Follow the garlic extract treatment (search the board here) to avoid the real possibility of an ich outbreak.
Good Luck

I'm in the same boat with my 90, what about an Atlantic Blue Tang, which seems to be on the smaller side?

Grows the size of a pie plate real quick. It also is a swimmer. For smaller tanks choose instead tangs like the kole which tend to hang around rather than swim.

I agree completely on the Yelloweyed Kole. The pictures don't do it justice as they really have a subtle beauty. Also have a great personality, gets along with other fish, loves the algae we hate, and as stated above is not a big swimmer like the other tangs. IIRC maximum size reported in aquaria is 7" with the average being less. The only real trick with the bristletooths is to watch them eat or graze before purchase if possible. Sometimes they will injure their mouth in collection or shipment and if so it is almost always doomed. Other than that they are hardy, less ick prone and less finicky eaters. Mine greedily takes pellets and flake as well as frozen. Then chows the Nori and algae all day.

BTW, I got lucky as I did MO mine.

purple tangs rule! i love mine he is full of personality a pig of an eater and has a good disposition. they get ick easily as do most tangs but after a treatment of kick-ick he cleared up just fine and ate food the whole time, i've had him for a year now completely trouble free.

I love the powder brown tangs...gorgeous fish! (whitecheek) Whatever you get don't count on the garlic for any sort of prevention. Quarantine the fish for 3 weeks first. good luck!

lynn, right on, but q/t should be one month minimum, with freshwater dip. as for garlic, i know lots of folks love it, but the evidence in its favor appears to be anectodal at best. and, what gets me is this: where's a fish gonna get garlic in the wild? now, saute that fat tang WITH garlic, NOW you're talkin'. ;) q/t with f/w dip, and yes, you can copper a tang. but really, prevention is the best bet because you will always have ich/parasites/protozoans/pathogens in your sys (just as in nature), it's the animal's own defenses that you need to keep intact through ensuring good water quality and giving them the best in nutrition.

Zebrasoma scopas is my FAY-VO-RITE tang in the world. their beauty is truly sublime, and i find them to be a highly underrated fish.

too bad we don't have any "dwarf" tangs like we do angels, eh?

nasos are a big pain in the ass, but i'm prejudiced, i've had to bag 'em for ship..LOULE! also, they are, without a doubt, sh!t machines (as i just stated on another thread). but, put 'em in a 500 and baby WATCH OUT! they're all that AND a bag o' chips.

Mine (powderbrown) is still in quarantine, but when he gets out I'll send a pic. He was at the LFS for 6 weeks (they held him) and I've had him in a hyposalinity(1.009) tank now for 23 days....I'm dieing to get him out and see him in the biggy!!
But your right seamaiden...about the length of quarantine, infact I usually keep them in even longer.
Thats why I just got this 159 gallon tank set up in the fishroom, so that they can spend their quaranting time in it instead of a 40 in the dark basement....well...or maybe's it more for my enjoyment

Here's a really poor picture of the tang.
