Hello all,

I am a new reefer started 6 months ago and everything is great. Thanks for all the wonderful info located here. Please answer something for me.

I am ready I think to start trading frags, I do not want to pay $50 for a small mushroom rock plus trading saves reefs, what are acceptable frag sizes? Right now I have red mushrooms & yellow star polyps & green mushrooms. Is a good frag dime, nickle, quarter sized or other? I want to trade but I want to be fair and not shortchange someone. I wish I saw a lot more trading but alas. I am located in Columbia SC and have seen no groups.

Thanks for your time & info.

The size of frags is very subjective and can often be dictated by the coral or shroom itself. When fragging my sps acros I like to give a nice hardy frag with multiple branches when I can, which is most often. With shrooms it kind of depends, ask people what they want for trade. If you are talking with someone about a specific trade you can get a good sense as to what would be fair. a few polyps free floating or some attached to a rock. Ask questions and make offers and see what happens. People will give you feedback.

Example-I recently traded a orange montipora capricornus frag with someone for some of their beautiful orange ricordia. It took a while for the weather to cooperate and my cap frag encrusted and grew. In the end it was a good trade because the orange ricordia is a rather expensive animal these days, especially one as beautiful as this one I traded for. I received a single small polyp which is healthy and just stunning and my counterpart is happy with his larger orange cap frag. It is all relative.

Another outlet for you SC folks.... I run a North Carolina trade group that has around 40 members, mostly within the state but some from TN, Va, and SC. If you are interested in joining, feel free. Its an email based list that gets infrequent mailings about upcoming meetings. We meet across the state and try to see some of the sights along the way. Our next meeting will likely be in the Charlotte area in late summer.

If you wish to join yourself, go to the yahoogroups and sign up, if you wish for me to sign you onto the list, email [email protected]

Its a great way to both meet people and get lots of trading in.

goofy, I don't have a pic yet of the ricordia frag. I need to do that :D . If you want to see the mother colony trip over to ReefCentral and do a member search on Guy. He put up a shot of his Ricordia under a thread of Pics of Ricordia. They are beauties.

Mac, Thanks for the link I had not seen that, WOW. Guy is very cool and clearly dedicated to this wonderful hobby. What a project he has going. You are lucky to live close enough to have personal visits.

Lucky you and me for getting some of his orange ricordia. :D

Scott,

Yup, it's all relative; especially for softies. If you are trading colts, disk anemone, xenia, then I'm sure you know a little goes a LONG way. :D

The point is to make sure you see photos of what you're trading before you trade for it to make sure you have quality and/or the particular trait (color, texture) you're looking for. e.g. white pom/pop xenia, brown encrusting or blue stalk?

Later...

Ok thanks this gives me some idea. I only have a 20g reef so I am taking it slow. I will post pics of any tradables so that the person on the other end know what they will get.
