OK its just not my week people. I have some waving hand xenia that had spread to another rock.It was doing well til about a week ago. I had to rearrange some corals due to the expansive growth of a recently purchased bubble.

Within a week the small colony had dusted out on me, while the mother colony was doing alright until two days ago when it shriveled up and has not extended since.

My wife happens to like this xenia so i need to do something everything else in the tank is thriving so it makes no sense to me.

Am 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0 cal 400 ppm temp 80. ph is good buffering cap good carbonate hardness all test at the upper end of the range.

I would wait a few more days, I have a toady that shrivels up, gets a film over the top, and 3 days later looks better than before :?

Side note, My wife requested that I bring some home. Now she's pissed that it dosn't waive.
Can't win either way

Xenia are sometimes weird and may thrive in one tank and just croak in another. I have been propagating my xenia frequently for quite some time and these are some things I seem to notice. They do need a nice steady water flow...not too much but plenty to move them actively. Also, some people may not agree but with my experience they need metal halide lighting or if vho or pc they need to be very high in the tank. Also, don't add iodine...just a tiny bit too much and they quickly deteriate. Also, I do notice in my tank that they actually don't do as well with high ph, but I do notice that you have an 8.0 ph so that should be ok. Hope they pull though for you.

Without immediately testing the PH it is in the upper range say 8.4 or so perhaps it is the iodine since i started to dose some lugols solution when I noticed the deterioration on the assumption that xenia do better with added iodine.

Yes it may be the lugals solution. I spoke with Dr. Ron Shimik about iodine once and he discouraged using it because of the toxicity of it. I would do a water change and then see if they start to perk up.

LOL...sounds familiar!!! I used the wifes love of xenia as an excuse to set up the reef. I am getting lots of spreading on them (two colors of pom-pom, and elongata). I have some pretty agrressive wave makers to circulate the water. The usuall comment is,"it doesn't look too 'happy'. Its not pusing." Until, ofcoarse, I shut off the filters at feeding time and it goes nuts.....

I drip my Kalk minh been doing it the same for a year through a kent aquadose so I really do think it would suddenly become a problem when it was flourishing at first.
