I use the surface skimmer/bubble box for the remora on my 37 gallon tank.
What I like about it:
1. It gets rid of the bubbles I was getting from the skimmer outflow. After three months, the bubbles from the skimmer never settled down. The bubble box works great.
2. I have a low flow tank and the surface was always grungy. The surface skimmer sucks all the crap from the surface very well (caveat - see #1 below)
3. I like the way the box hides the pump.
What I dont like about it:
1. In order for the surface skimmer to work - the water level can't be too high or too how. If it's too high - no surface skimming occurs. If its too low, the pump sucks the water out of the chamber faster than its flowing in.
Without the surface skimmer on, I would top off one gallon every three days. With it on I have to either top off a quart or so every day or move the box down. Either way - its a pain in the butt. What to do when I go away for the weekend - I have to give up surface skimming till I get back.
2. The way that AquaC designed how the box attaches, is poor. The two screws that hold the box in place are in the same vertical plane and only about two inches from one another. This acts as a piviot point and the box is difficult to keep level. The outflow tends to push that side of the box down. This also contributes to problem #1.
I modified the box per the recommendation from someone on this board - who's name I don't remember (a thousand pardons to that person) so the the box could hang correctly.
3. The pump fits snuggly in the compatment. The pump touchs the sides of the box and makes a vibration noise that drives me a little nuts when I am PMS
Hope this helps
