no scratching, heavy breathing or loss of appetite on this fish. im not sure what this is so maybe the pic will help. all the water parameters tested good. ammonia 0 nitrate 0 nitrite 0 calcium 430 ph 8.3, and salinity at 1.021 anyone have a clue as to what these white blotches might be? other inhabitants inclue a snowflake eel and a clown trigger. he's been opening up to the eel as a show of aggression but the clown gets along great with him. anyway here's the picture

His tail looks pretty ratty, but it may just be from the poor quality of the photo. Sounds like it might be starting to change over to adult coloration. What was the question?

i was just curious if something was wrong with him. his tail is a little ratty, and i think the eel is the culprit due to the fact that he shows his dominance to him a lot. im thinkin of getting rid of the eel because of that.

could be quite a few things-

dizzy's suggestion could be it-i've also seen imps' color get 'blotchy' as the pattern started to change.

may be stress related-from the eel

could also be bacterial(taken into account w/the tail-unless the moray is the culprit there-and they're not cause related)

bottom line- as long as he's eating well-you're probly o.k.

do you have the option of isolating the eel temporarily, in order to rule it out(or in) as the cause?

actually that's what i was throwin around i might get a tank and set it up with the same water and do a water change with that water to put the eel in just keep him in that tank till my 110 is cycled he ate some seaweed out of my hand this afternoon so he's doin great other than the blotches. The eel already killed my sleeper goby so he's the culprit. I will get him out of there probably this weekend.

how long you had him? IF he's new then the tail is just going through what I call latent lfs effects. A ratty tail seems to happen whenever i get a new fish from lfs. If this is not a new fish I would worry about it.

I really don't understand why your fish would always develop the ratty tail. Perhaps they are damaged in the netting process or else your water parameters are very different from the lfs. I don't believe this is all that common, but I would like to hear from others. I believe the ratty tail is most commonly caused by fighting.

skilos1-

not trying to worry you, but-

fwiw-
i have seen imps come in with a type of worm?/fluke? that sometimes coincided with 'blotchiness'.the organisms are, initially seen only after lights out,on/in the lenses of the fishes eyes-when the situation progresses, the organisms(look like a type of flatworm, maybe?)can readily be seen during the day.

don't panic, please-just pay attention to the eyes every couple of nights for the next few weeks, and also be on the lookout for cloudy lenses when the tank is lit-since your fish is eating well,i doubt your fish has this- one of the coinciding symptoms in each of these cases was loss of appetite.

keep us all posted-for now, removing the eel and adopting a wait and see attitude does seem to be your best bet :)

i looked at his eyes closely after the lights had been off for a little while and his eyes were clear. i was checking on him to see how he was doing last night. he ate out of my hand this morning. i fed him some spirulina with vitamins in it. i also gave him some pieces of seaweed soaked in garlic last night. i think im going to do as you said and just wait and see. if it is what are your suggestions for treatment of this? thanks a lot
