A Mak 4 pump puts out 1190 gph @ full flow and a Quiet One 1140gph @ full flow. I dont know if either one is a pressure rated pump. I hate the amount of noise that the Mak 4 makes so this is my question. Would a quiet one pump do a comparably good job to the mak 4 on a bullet 2 skimmer?

Thanks for your help

I haven't used a Quiet One pump. But I have used the MAK4 for many years. It is claimed to be a pressure pump but I find its GPH drops sharply under pressure applications such as beckett skimmers. I removed my MAK4 for an Iwaki MD55RLT which is rated at lower GPH 1050 @ 4ft but the performance was fantastic and blew away the MAK4 because the Iwaki is a true pressure pump.

I've had a Quiet One before as a return pump on my 100 gal. tank and it was a great pump. It can be used in pressure applications as well. Nowadays, however, I'm partial to the magdrives. I have the 1800 and the 2400. The 1800 powers the proteim Skimmer and the 2400 is the return. They're quite and I like the fact that they can be used submerged or inline, I prefer to keep everything contained within the sump so I go submerged (murphy's law). All in all, a great pump, you might want to look at them. If you have your heart set on the quiet one, however, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I second Searay's recommendation for the same reasons, especially if you want to stay submerged. When installing in-line, I've had success with Iwaki's both as system pumps and skimmers.

They're both pressure rated pumps. However, the Iwaki is rated for a higher PSI than the Mak4 which is why people see better performance from the Iwaki. Here's the curves:

Mak4:

Head (ft) gph
0.0 1188.8
3.3 1093.7
6.6 1014.4
9.8 903.5
13.1 760.8
16.4 586.5
19.7 364.6
23.0 0.0

Iwaki 55:

Head (ft) 55 RT
0 1158
4 1080
12 900
20 540
28 0

Hope this clears it up. :D

A rough answer is that it's how high the pump will pump water (assuming no restrictions or frictional loss) or how many PSI the pump will pump against. 1 PSI = 2.3 ft head, so the Mak4 and Iwaki 55 will pump up to 10 PSI 12.2 PSI respectively.

Well just for those who wish to know how the quiet one pump did with the bullet skimmer. In a realy nice and simply way "it su**ed". This pump did not even give the skimmer a chance to perform. So for now I am back to the mak 4 until I can find a replacement that will give me the power but a little more quiet. Thank you guys for all your help.

Thanks Shane.
I thought that it meant something like that. I have an Iwaki 55rlt that I run through an Ocean Clean canister filled with charcoal. The height of my tank is about 4 1/2 feet. It has been running 24/7 for about 7 yearts without any problems. The pressure does slow down some as the filter get dirty.

I recently moved and am putting my tank & stuff back together. I decided to add my old silent one pump. I plan on purchasing one of those Ocean Current rotating pulsers to have more water movement. And right now I just have the silent one running without anything attached to it. It seems like it is about 1/2 as powerful as the Iwaki 55 rlt. And I never used it more then a total of less then 1 year. And it was frozen. I had to take it apart and move the inside by hand a couple times to get it to run. I think I originally bought it to use with a Berlin hang on protein skimmer. But it was a little to weak for that protein skimmer to work properly. But it should be strong enough for the rotating current generator. Thanks again.

I haven't been very involved with the tank for a few years. But the move made me try to look up some of the old boards I use to read to learn stuff. And this board and
http://www.premiumaquatics.com/ are the only two boards I was able to find so far.
