I was wonering if anyone can tell me how I can rid myself of the algae I am about to describe. I believe it is hair algae, but since I am only in the hobby for 4 1/2 months, I don't know for sure. It is a black, transluecent film that has long stands growing out of it. The strands are about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches on the longest strands. It is growing on my sand and on a couple of rocks. The other day I siphoned a bunch off the sand. It came of easy, but grew back 2 days later. I don't want to siphon all the beneficial life out of my tank, but I don't want to be letting this algae take over either.
Maybe there is an animal that will eat this stuff. Maybe I should keep siphoning. I don't know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just so you know here are the specs on the system. 90 gallon tank with 3 inch sand bed. 110 lbs of rock. Bak Pak II skimmer. 2 Rio 2500 powerheads for circulation. All reading are within limits. I figure this is becasue the algae is comsuming them so they are reading 0. 220 watts of VHO. 110 attinic and 110 50/50. I have a yellow tank, false peculla clown, 2 neon gobies, yellow tail damsel, 2 emerald crabs. about 15 assorted snails, 2 fighting conches, serpant star, brittle star, a cucumber of some kind, and a cleaner shrimp.
