I just attempted to hang my new MH setup and failed. there are now 5 nice size holes in my ceiling. I that expand once you screw them all the way up so that they can each hold 40 lbs. I ether hit conduet or wood. i couldnt seem to just hit empty space. then the hook broke! Any ideas from anyone on better means for hanging setup? thanks!say

Hitting wood is a good thing. Don't rely on drywall/ceiling board alone to hold your fixture. Hitting conduit on the other hand sucks. I would just use large wood screws, or a toggle bolt through the wood. You would be able to easily use the existeing holes with a toggle bolt. They look like this:

The v-shaped bolt part springs open once it is inside your ceiling, assuming you are fastening to a hollow ceiling. You can get these at Home Depot.

i think im just gonna try using the existing wood and buy some eye hooks. Otherwise ill have to get a stud finder and go from there.

For 40 lba and up, screw it into wood is the safest way. As the above you should try to get the stud. IF the stud is not suitable for the position of light. try to make a stud. Even the toggle screws, i do not trust it to hang 40lbs or up.
