Kert: Where are the holes located A picutre or diagram will help us answer you better. You do not want to cover holes with sand that are on the pathway to your sump on any return line.

Kert,
You need to seal these holes w/ silicone before filling your tank the pressure of the water crashing down in the overflows wil push sand away causing a disturbance in your sand bed and piling it up against the glass. The holes in the bottom are really for fish only bare bottom tanks for reciculation, not for sand bed reefs.

UMMMMM..... those holes suck water into the overflow not out of. its a neat design that allows part of the overflows water to be from the bottom of the tank. however if your sandbed will be above these holes, you may have to seal them, af corse covering them with plastic would be lest permanent. and when this is done, you may have to enlarge the upper oned to accomidate the flow. IMO

just put a bulk head fitting in the holes, then run a PVC pipe up into the tank for the proper heigth you want the water to drain from.

no thats not what he means, i believe he is talking about the intake on the outer overflow wall located at the bottom of the wall, wich brings water into it and above the next wall. here is a diagram. where the arrow points are the slots he is talking about.

Did you draw that up yourself? :D
I think the overflow is a 2-part wall with the outer having the slots and the inner is solid.
I think that covering the bottom slots with a piece of plastic should be sufficient.

the worse that could happen with leaving it alone would be the bottom portion of the overflow fills with sand.
