I have a large trash can in the garage that I use to mix 45gal or so for my 180G reef. It has a heater and a large submersible pump that I use for mixing. I use a sump pump connected to a garden hose to pump the water from the garage to the main tank.

I agree, it sounds very wrong (kids don't try it), but I've had a Majestic Angel in there for over 14 months now and it doesn't seem to mind. It's not like I dump in the whole bag, then fill with water. I trickle in both. I should probably spring for a 50 gallon bucket, but there's really nowhere to store it at my bar.

I would never advocate this method. Sure-fire way to end up killing things, IMO.
