I currently have a 58gal with about 50#LR in it. Have been running a small W/D filter with a CPR BakPak skimmer. I want to do away with the W/D and skimmer and up-grade to a larger sump and skimmer set-up.

I have been slowly removing the bio balls from the filter and an about 70% finished. The tank has been running for a year now.

My plan was to, in a day, install the new sump, add a sand/live sand and some LR to the sump and fire it up again.

Am I missing something? I assume the LR is providing the neccessary bio-filtration now.

As suggestions are appreciated. Also, still shopping for the skimmer so if you have any suggestions.......

THANKS!!

Mainly sounds like a good plan and good execution, but I would do a couple things differently.

First, you might not need a new sump. Once the bioballs are out, you could just add sand to what used to be the wet/dry. If it's just that the W/D is not suitable as a general sump, then I would swap it out with whatever you are going to use. That part of the plan is fine.

I would not add the sand and new rock all at once, unless the rock is coming from the display tank or is otherwise fully cured. If it's not, then add a piece every week or couple weeks (depending on size) until you have the amount you want.

I would be even more cautious with the sand. If it's live sand, then the act of taking it from somewhere and putting it all in your system could wreak havoc with the bacteria. If it's dead, there is less risk, but I still don't like adding all at once. I would add a cup of sand every day or so, and then seed with some live sand at some point in that process.
