I use the Velocity T4! It is an awesome pump. Made in Hungary! Iwaki's, Little Giant, and almost all the other pumps use a different technology. The ceramic components are loud and they often cease if water drains from the pump and you try and restart it. Another reason they are loud is because the balancing (or lack there of) in the motor. The vibration used to drive me mad on my Little Giant. This Velocity is like a Mercedez....Very powerful with plenty or torque yet you never hear the engine from inside the car!!!

Lemme know what you buy.
I purchased mine from www.MarineDepot.com

It's true, I can plug my T4 in and I have to look up at the return to make sure it is working. No way to hear it over the hood fan and water noises.

I use two QuietOne pumps and love them. They are silent! I bought my first one through an online retailer and paid $98. I've seen them as high as $199. in LFS. If you email me, I can tell you how to get a second Quietone for $60. to use as a back up, closed loop or whatever. That's two Quietone pumps for $160. 8) With the asking price for some of the brands out there, I found this to be an exceptional deal!

Just curious about the heat transfer of these pumps. I know one of the reasons the Iwaki are a tad bit noisy is that they are fan cooled. Basically giving up one problem (noise) for the other (heat transfer). Do the Velocity pumps transfer much heat?

I believe in most cases, the water passes through the pump too fast to absorb much heat. Unless your tank is very small, I can't see how this short contact time would be an issue. That's my 2 cents worth!

I have them both (lifeguard quiet one; and iwaki 50rlt) in my system. The lifeguards are incredibly quiet but (i) do put alot of heat into the system (there is no fan -they are like heaters) and (ii) they have a very high failure rate (and they are not pressure rated). So - I'd limit the lifeguards to a return (low back pressure application). The iwaki is loud - but its a great pump.

Sorry Robbinson but I have to disagree with you on the Quiet one being a "heater". Mine runs 24/7 and lifts 5.5'. When touching the impeller housing, it is cool to the touch. Not warm...cool. There is no way this can be considered a heater. Perhaps some other factors are involved with your setup, age of pump, throttling...etc. Forgive me if I'm wrong but I say heat is NOT a factor when considering a Quietone pump. And no, I do not work for them or sell pumps. I'd love to hear other comments on these pumps as I run two of them. Okay, there's my 2 cents. I feel better now!

If it's cool to touch seems to me that's a clear indication that it's transfering most of it's pruduced heat back to the water

I'm using a Little Giant. It is pretty quiet as it pushes water four feet up. If the above people are talking about a hum, I have more noise coming from a RIO in the sump. The water temp stays around 80F-82F. When I added the RIO the temp went up from 78F-80F. The LG didn't raise the temp at all. I should also mention it is zip tied on a milkcrate on top of a piece of wood.

Interesting. My lifeguards run very hot to the touch. I currently have a lifeguard quiet one running through my lifeguard filtration modules (mechanical, chemical and UV) and then back to the sump. Admittedly, this application creates resistance as the mechanical filter gets dirtier which could result in pump overheating. I also used to use a lifeguard quiet one on my precision marine skimmer (before I replaced that with an gemini 800 run off an iwaki 55rlt). That pump also got very hot. Both pumps have failed often. My guess is that these pumps should be used for purely non-pressure applications like a sump return. In that application, perhaps they run cooler.

I just had a quiet one fry my tank. Was gone for 4 days and came home to 94 degree water. Lost a fair amount of soft corals. The pump was about 2 years old. Ran fine up to the barbeque. Tried switching to a T4 titanium, it would burn my hand to touch it. Finally tried a new quiet one. It is ok, but still transfers several degrees of heat. I keep a large fan on the sump to be safe. I am trying to bring myself to accepting the noise of an iwaki 30.

Go with the iwaki and move the equipment from under your stand to a remote location (either next room closet or floor below the tank). I pursuing that reconfig now on my tank to deal with the noise generated by 2 external pumps, a submersible pump and a chiller (and thereby save my marraige!)..

If I moved my pumps down into the basement about 5' lower then where they are, would that cut down the pressure a lot. I have an Iwaki 55rlt pump. And including my stand the water gets pumped about 4 1/2' above the pump now.

Anyone using the AquaMedic Ocean Runner series of pumps? Any good? How about noise levels?

Cheers,
