I've been trying to track down some Southdown sand. I have left emails and no one has contacted me back so I decided to go to their website and talk to someone in person. This person informed me that Southdown has been bought out about a year ago and they were not sure if they were still making the play sand. I was transfered a few times and ultimatley had to leave a message. Have any of you heard about this? Do any of you live in my area and know where I could pick some up? I'd like to go this route since it would be cheaper than having sand delived to my house.

Contact Murray Brookshear @ [email protected]

I just picked up a couple hundred pounds of them yesterday, and I think he still has some left. He is a bit far from you though, if you want to make that trip. He is at chino hill, Southern California. I think there are someone at Victorville that may have some too, but check with Murray, he may know who else has them.

one of the local home depots has it and has no problem getting more when what they have gets used up. If anyone is intersted i would be more than happy to box some up and ship it to you i drive by every day. I asked at work and can ship on my companies ups acount so it would be pretty reasonable especially considering the junk some unnammed companies get $35 a bag for.

Hey ReefRian,
I live in Napa and work in Sacramento. Maybe we can convince Home Depot to ship us a pallet of Southdown from one of their other stores. I am in the process of getting everything together to set up a 500 gallon tank, so I will need quite a bit. How much do you need?

I was looking to get some within the next month if possible. Want to have it when I'm ready to set up my tank. Waiting on the stand to get finished. Still need to paint it. Figured if I got Southdown I could hold on to it as long as I needed without puting it in my tank immediatly.

Forgive me for asking, but what is Southdown sand? Is it just Silica Playsand? Why wouldn't you want Aragonite? Is it just a cost issue, or is there some good quality about this sand? :?:

Southdown is not silica. It's sand sold by the Southdown Corp that is aragonite based. It's called "Tropical Playsand" and is very similar to the Carib Sea Aragamax product but at about $4.25 per 50 pound bag compared to the normal $20-30 per 30 pound bag in most LFS's.

You can see some photomicrographs of the different sands in this thread here:
