I generally make up about 40 gallons of salt water for changes. How long will this last? will it be ok for a month or so?

It really depend on what size your tank and what and how much you are keeping and your filtration efficiency.

Generally, the usual practice is 20% of tank volume per month.
However, if filtration efficiency have not mature and/or your bioload is on the high side, then 5 - 10% per week.

if you keep the water circulating, it should be fine-the issue is really more of stuff getting into your storage container(dust, pollen, bacteria, etc) that may give you nitrates, or even ammonia, over time.(though you may also get some carbonates precipitating out, too.)

if you're gonna be keeping it for that long(why? )i'd suggest that you test it before you use it-just to play it safe.

fwiw-i'd recommend making up your water only a couple of days before your changes

I keep salt water mixed up ready to use in airtight containers (20 gallons or so). No issues with it. I've gone more than a month before using. I don't leave a power head in it as I find the calcium will precip out onto the powerhead witihin a week or so with fresh salt mixes. I let it mix for 24 hours and then store it or use it.
