I sold my skimmer, my rock and DSB today, and I was thinking, I don't need rock and a skimmer for a FO tank. I could even still sell the halides out of my enclosure and put in cheapo stuff. New sand bed, and a damsel is worth sa start. I have a Emperor 280 so I can run carbon, and as long as I don't use the halides, energy costs are low (too broke to continue full reef hobby right now).

But, what the hell could I put in it? A puffer? An eel? Never had an eel.

Ideas?

I guess my questions is Why?? I Love my reef, man!

I would have at least kept the LR and LS.

Eels are cool, but they prefer hiding places, don't they? Puffers are cool, and so are angelfish.

Well, I can always get new rock and sand. The main issue is money. I can't afford to keep using B-Ionic, keep running the MH, etc. Yes, I am THAT broke. Next months rent might go on a credit card.

I would have kept the skimmer IMO, but I guess if you needed the rent.

I had a spiney boxfish(burrfish) in a 20 gal high when I was young. It was a very tough fish for me and very interesting. I'm not sure of their maximum size though. I know the porcupine puffers can get around 2 feet long.

I had a couple of eels once and they were very cool pets! They have very poor eyesight though so don't get bit like I did.

I have had a snowflake and a olive green one that would probably have out grown my 75 very quickly. They seemed to grow slowly in my tank and I fed them once to twice per week.

Keep in mind that they are escape artists and you will need a covered top with NO escape holes because they will find them and end up on your floor. Also I had my snowflake make a trip to the sump via the overflow. I couldn't believe it made it down there alive but the impeller back to the tank via my little giant pump did him in. I returned the green morrae and started my reef back in 1997

Just plan for what ever you keep and you will have fun showing off your animals.

imo, A FOWLR-FISH ONLY WITH LIVE ROCK IS EASIER THAN FO WITH SKELETAL CORAL, AND CHEAPER AS THEIR ARE MORE RESTRICTIONS ON BUYING SKELATOL CORAL. But if its too late, and want fish for a 29, try a school of blue and green chromis, they are cheap, hardy and you will have a complete set-up.

Not really interested in a school of damsels.

What are the feeding requirements of boxfish, in general?

Someone posted recently about setting up a species tank for jawfish, that might be an interesting approach for your tank if your sand bed is approprate.

Mine ate practically anything I put in the tank. Krill and meaty frozen foods come to mind. Mine also ate crabs, shrimp, sticklebacks, mummichogs and also started looking at the octopus I had. That's when the boxfish went back to the store.
