Could I keep these in a 46g FO?

The book referenced by Whirley is an excellent book. Get it and refer to it as a guideline. I personally subscribe to the notion that the tanks sizes stated in the books are the MINIMUM size that success is possible. I'd go with a larger tank, or pick a different fish, less you care to watch it suffer.

Also, please consider that the reefer's on this board are NOT a bunch of no-it-alls. Many of the people (self included) only know what we know because we rushed into the hobby, bought all the wrong things, then learned to ask/research first, before making any additions to our tanks.

We are trying to help you save some money and save a few fish from dying needlessly. :wink:

I just niticed you ae thinking of 2 centropyges in the same tank. Daniel, that is not a good idea either. Please read the link i gave you. There is some excellent information there. BTW, I don't gossip, it reflects poorly on the one talking not the one being talked about.

1.5 to 2 inch. The problem with small tangs is that they need frequent feeding, or nori always available to graze on. Regal or purple tangs are usually available at these sizes.

Ok, you mean juveniles. I do buy smaller fish right now, knowing they will outgrow the tank tey are in. I have 1 250 that will be a sump ready if the angel gets too big for the tank. When I purchase fish I don't figure on an upgrade unless I am ready for it. Knowing Daniel is 13 and has few prospects for getting a larger tank, I don't see an adult tang working in a 46. BTW, is your tank glass or acrylic. I don't remember.

DJM- NO tang is going to be happy or live long in that size tank. I won't even try them in my 75. As far as pygmy/centropyge angels, only 1 in even a big tank, or you may have a war that could end up in the deaths of both angels (they'll fight until one dies, as the one can't escape to another area, like on a reef, and the one that survives will probably be too injured and exhausted to survive as well).

With that said, in a 46 gallon tank, you could keep 1 pygmy or centropyge angel, 2 percula's, and a royal gramma. This is after your tank has cycled, and wait at least 1 month between each addition of fish. Forget about the tangs. BTW, they can be quite good at introducing ich into a tank that is too small, or not to their liking. Ich in a saltwater tank is much more difficult to treat than in a freshwater tank.

-Terry, the other problem is that they will need a larger tank within a year or two. Should we really recommend someone purchasing a fish like this who does not have the proper size tank to accommodate a growing fish?

As a side note, the angels may not like one another's presence. They'll probably be very aggressive to one another. But, you asked if you should do FOWLR, and I would say absolutely yes. It gives them hiding space, provides filtration, and makes the tank look more real.

I like how tangs are rated for such high tank sizes but then you goto www.drsfosterandsmith.com and look at there tanks they have for sale. You will notice they are selling a 12gal eclipse system and they have a picture of the tank with a yellow tang in the tank. :lol:
