I've got some clowns coming in tomorrow. I set up a quarantine tank with an aquaclear filter (waterfall type w/mechanical and chemical filtration - activated carbon and a sponge), a heater, and a flourescent light. My LFS reccommended that I use water from my 105 reef tank to fill the QT tank, but one of my tangs has black ich (almost gone). Should I mix new salt water or use water from my reef? Or should I have some sort of mixture? Also, what should I do about biological filtration? The filter that I have can use 'ammonia' filters. One person posted that they regularly use Amquel. I will be doing 10-20 pct water changes every couple days. My LFS suggested putting a piece of LR from the reef into the QT - but again the black ich. Clowns are going into the QT. Any opinions? Also, should I medicate the fish? I plan on QTing for about two weeks before I transfer them to my reef.

I wouldn't use anything from the infested tank. Throw a piece of shrimp in the aquaclear ASAP so that bacteria can begin to form.

Can you catch the tang and QT him too?

How long has the QT been up?

What are you doing do combat the ich? Garlic?

What other fish are in the main tank?

One other thing. Can't you let the lfs hold your clowns until you are sure your QT has biology established?

QT isn't even up yet, thats why I asked about which water to use. Wouldn't any medications just kill the bacteria? I tried to catch the tang... he hides whenever I open the top of the tank or the net goes anywhere near him. I couuuld get a trap and try that, but the ich is almost gone. I've been feeding 5x per day with flakes soaked in liquid garlic extract and vitamin C. Main tank - two cardinals, naso tang, orange shoulder tang (iched), anthias, damsel.

What's the point in establishing a bacteria supply if i'm going to medicate the tank? Unless the medications don't kill nitrosomas , etc.

Clowns are being shipped.

I wouldn't use anything from the old tank. And I wouldn't medicate the q-tank with the new fish unless there is a problem. Without a bio-filter happening, you'll have to watch for ammonia spikes, keep water ready for a large water change and keep a bare bottom so you can vac any dirt right away. If your q-tank is small, it shouldn't be too difficult to maintain water quality with water changes.

Good luck

Should I vacuum with a siphon or my carpet shampooer. I think the latter can pick up dirt faster.

I would leave the carpet shampooer out of the tank if I were you. Too many things have passed through that thing that can pollute your water.

I would'nt put the tank water into the shampooer either to clean the carpet. I would use clean water all around.
