i had this smaller piece of rock that i go tfrom a previous owner with some coral hermits on it and i noticed this type of algea growing on the entire surface of it. it is a deep, dark red almost maroon color , it looks like slime from far away but up closer like a foot away, you can tell it is extremly fuzzy in appearance like crushed velvet. It is also very thick too, like an 1/8 of an inch. i asnt too concered at first but now it has speard to the rest of my live rock and it is growing there too! darn stuff is getting everywhere! please help! i have tried these clear shrimp i wa told would eat red algea but they dont even look at it and i have tried blue leg hermits but they dont like it either. i have even tried poly ox, from kent marine for cyano bac but that hasnt worked either. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance!

DarkA,
It sounds to me like Cyanobacteria. I did a quick search on this board and there are tons of threads that discuss it. I have seen it before in others tanks but have not had to deal with it <to such an extreme extent> first hand.

You might want to post a reply that gives some detailed information about the makeup of your tank like size, lighting, filtration, circulation, what you have for rock, sand and fish and how long the tank has been running. One or more of those things may be contributing to the problem and someone who knows more may pick up on something and be able to help you out.

Good luck.

Karen
