I have a few questions about coralline algea:

I have some moderate coverage (30%) of coralline on my rocks mostly pink and purple.

My powerheads are 100% covered with pink purple algea,

However, the back glass of my tank only seems to want to grow GREEN corraline, I know it is corralline because it is a hard calcerous algea. there are a few spots of pink and purple but 90 % of it is green.

How do I promote the pink and purple shades and discourage the green ?

Why does purple and pink grow everywhere else in abundance but only green on the back glass ?

I am running 2x55 watt pcs on a 37 gal 1 atinic and 1 6700K

thx rich

I have found that the red stuf grows where ever I point the power heads.
I think it likes a strong current.

Here's what I noticed in my tank. (80g) On my black Maxi-jets, the blue grows real well, and some on the rocks. On the rocks that are shaded, I have dark purple and maroon. The pink orginally grew best on anything acrylic, like the overflow box. Like you, I had only green on the back and pink on the front glass.

My tank is 6' long, and I use 96w cf. I orginally had the two Act03's in the front, and the 10,000k's in the back. Just for the heck of it one day I switched them. I still have a fair amount of green and pale yellow on the rocks, and none on the back glass. It wasn't until I started to scrape the front glass, that I noticed more on the back, and the green started dissapearing. I now scrape the front glass with a razor blade every two weeks or I can't see. From the looks of the back glass, I'd say it will be covered solid in about 6 months. The other thing I changed was the return from the sump now flows straight down the back of the tank.

I guess I said all that to say if you scrape the color you want to spread, then direct more flow where you want it, that should do it.

Regards, Eric

i noticed that my coralline really took off when i added more water flow to the tank as well. the spot where i have the most flow is the right back corner and back of the tank thanks to a maxijet and the skimmer. those spots in the tank are almost completely covered in coralline. my powerheads have alot, too.

i also noticed more growth when i bought new lights. heh, go figure.

Lights seem to make the most difference. I have different colors growing depending on where/how the light hits them. In your case, it would appear the pink/purple thrives in direct light, the green in indirect. Remember the glass is at a 90 degree angle to the light source, so the light is not hitting it full on. I can almost use the coralline as a light meter, the color that's taken over a particular area tells me how much light is getting to that spot.
In my case, whitish pink and green like the glass walls and shady areas, and purple, maroon, and orange have taken over where the lights are the brightest. I've got 4 65 watt PC's on my 75 gal. 2 blue and 2 white, kept on a 12 on 12 off schedule.
