I have a cabinet being built for my 180 and need to start thinking of what type of fans to use for blowing air out of my sump and hood area.

I will be blowing air from two locations within the cabinet and ducting it out of my house thru one pipe. I don't want to have all the humidity in my house. I also need to reduce my hood temp. so it will not over heat my water.

Here are my questions:

-Who makes a quiet and energy effecient fan??
-Does anyone make a fan that is heat activated?
-Has anyone ducted the air into thier attic and relied on the hot air to rise thru ducting with no fans?

Thanks!!!!

IMHO the two best fans made are Sanyo Denki & Panaflo. The provide the most airflow w/ the least amount of noise. They ain't cheap either.

You can find a good selection of fans at either www.digikey.com or www.alliedelec.com.

As far as efficiency goes 12 volt DC fans generally move more air with less noise than AC fans, but they require a transformer. Also larger fans are generally quieter for the same amount of air movement (they spin slower).

Keep in mind that when looking at the DBA ratings that 1dba louder is a ten fold increase in noise. A good baseline to use is that 30dba is about the same as a human whisper.

Yes, most fan makers have a heat sensitive fan. They come with a sensing unit that will increase speed with heat.

Use fans to push fresh air in, thus increasing life of the fan and avoiding rust. If the canopy is vented (maybe backless) then the hot air will push out the vent as the fresh air is pushed in. I'd recommend Orion fans, available for about $15, from http://www.alliedelec.com/catalog/pf.asp?FN=92.pdf . I like the OA125AP-11 but the OA109AP-11 is only 26db @ 50cfm! Remember db is exponential. So a RadioShack fans, which are over 30db, are a lot louder than 26db. HTH

PS: I looked at Sanyo Denki & Panaflo and I don't think they compare. Maybe I didn't see all the models. If they offer 26db fans that push 70cfm or more please PM me.

I talked to Snayo Denki and they one they recomended for AC was the 109S024UL. It has a db rating of 40 and 83 cfm. I have not checked out the panaflo yet. I was recommended to push not pull by Sanyo.

These are the fans I just put it two of my canopies

http://www.maxpoint.com/peripherals/per ... _8tcfs.htm

I bought them when from Newegg.com when I bought my new video card. I got transformers for them for $4. So for $10 each I got a quiet heat controlled fan.

I only have a 15 gal and a 7 gal, so the 33cfm is fine for me.

40dB? That's horrible!

26db (what I recommeneded) is whisper quiet... 30db imo is too loud.. remember db is exponential

I'd have to agree, if you're looking for under 30dba then the choices are limited. Personally I use 30dba as the cutoff since that's about the level of a human whisper. Yes, the best panaflow will run 70cfm@30dba. The best part about the panaflow's is that they will last almost indefinately. I've had 3 in my comp for over three years & they're still running (& I don't clean them much). Sanyo's are a bit louder, but there are models comparable to the panaflows. Also the Enermax fans in the link above are excellent, I've had their power supply for several years w/o a single problem. I had an Orion in my hood w/o much success, it failed after about 10 months. It was VERY quiet & did a good job, I was just disappointed in the life span.

I guess a summary for this thread could be ANYTHING but those POS Radio Shack fans

(40dba???? Yikes! I had one of those 40dba/7000rpm delta fans in my comp once - for about 2 seconds, I don't know how anyone could tolerate that amount of noise)
