Does anyone put anything under you aquarium stand before you set the tank up. My stand has a 5/8 plywood floor and is underneath a 200 gall tank? My floor is level but hardwood. Is there anything that I should put down to protect it?

Well, you could tile that area. I don't think a rug is a good idea, as any spills may not dry (not like you can take the rug out to wash and dry it either), and that would rot the wood floor. Maybe some kind of thin plastic sheet that would prevent water from getting underneath it. If I had the ability, I would personally tile where the tank will sit, not the entire wood floor! Then spills etc won't do any damage (as long as your tiling job is good).

After we moved from the first apartment I had a SW tank in, we started putting down plastic floor mats... you know the "Hi traffic" area stuff you can buy at the Hardware store. Works wonders, as I spill quite frequently. It's also a good idea to put a carpet runner or something in front of the tank, as you undoubtedly will drip pulling things in and out of the tank.
If I had the time, money, and space, I would get the floor underneath tiled and a floor drain installed, but... Those three precursors are in short supply.

mrrrkva,

Are you asking about structural integrity of the floor? Or are you worried about the hardwood floor getting saltwater damage?

I just put in a bunch of 2x6 joists under my rental house! 8O The tank used to sway so bad when you walked by in front of it.

I never thought I would be doing so much to someone else's house for my aquarium. To think that this tank is only temporary.... sigh.

I had a 135 Gal and put a 3 inch tall steal "tun" with a drain under the stand... actually the stand was in the tub. The tub had a line running out of it. (the tank was on the second floor) and the line ran down stairs and outside. This was to insure that if the tank somehow drained out the tub would catch it and take the water outside. It was just a few inches over 6' long and 3" high so it held alot of water. I'd rather my tank die then the floor of my house upstairs.
