Has anyone had any problems lately? I am going to pick some up in Winchester (i hope they have it) and was told that it says on bag NOT REEF SAFE, or something to that affect. Does anyone need any in my area? I live in Harrisonburg but travel to lynchburg quite a bit.

I've read somewhere here that Southdown was advised to disclose that on the bag for legal purposes only (CYA type thing.) I don't know for sure however, because SD is not available in my area (unfortunately...)

I think that what it says is "not for aquarium use" but as far as I know the product is the same. I'm using it.

This is almost certainly the result of contractual agreements that require Southdown to supply aquarium sand "exclusively" to Carib-sea. Obviously I can't say that for sure, but from what others have said it's the same product we've all been using.

Isn't that price gouging (hence, illegal)?

What section of Home Depot is Southdown sand located. I was in a HD in Chicago today. In their plant section outdoors they were selling either 1 yard or 1/2 yard bags of sand for $2.24. They also had other products for plants. I think the brand name was Decorators landscapping or something like that. Is this the same sand as Southdown? Or was I in the wrong section? It was a sandy color and looke clean and fine grade.

Just an observation:

I noticed that Carib-Sea completely seals their bags of sand and the Southdown product was not.

This has led some (myself included) to be concerned about possible contamination from HD's storage near other products. (Fertilizer, pesticides, etc.)

Hmmm.......strange.

I bought a few hundred pounds a couple of months ago and all the bags were sealed. Just bought another couple of bags about three weeks ago and those bags were sealed too.

How many bags did you have that were not sealed?

My HD has them out in the Garden/Outdoor section (not sure if that's the official name :) ). They carry a whole line of Southdown products out there. The only other sand they carry is the Quikcrete product and that's in the Masonry section.

HD may not carry Southdown products out your way. It seems to be a regional thing. The Northeastern stores (I'm in Upstate NY) seem to carry Southdown products.

These are what my bags look like. They seem to be micro perforated, and have a special valve where they are filled. You can stick your hand in this opening. The sand comes out of the bag if your not careful. (You can see some coming out in the middle pic.)

Interesting......mine are just plain plastic bags - no valve. I wonder if this is something new Southdown is doing with the packaging?...
