standard 120 vs custom 150

i was originally planning a standard 48x24x24 120 gal tank setup, but now i'm beginning to think that i'd like to go bigger. i'm thinking of having a custom 150 gal built, 48x30x24 (30 being front to back, 24 being top to bottom). this would give me more room for aquascaping, something i plan to spend a fair bit of time on. how do you folks feel about the idea?

Go bigger, of course. I have a 120 and a 150, and I can say without a doubt that the 150 is bigger! Mine is 60x24x24- if you have the space for that length its a nice size. "Pre-engineered" custom from Oceanic.

i agree. im in the same sorta situation. im was thinking a 125 though, with a standard size of 72x18x20 (dont quote that). i think it would be nice to have a wider (front to back) tank, and im actually thinking about going to a 72x24x20. this would essentialy be a 180 gallon tank squashed down ~4" to the hieght of a 125. this keeps the light requirements slightly lower(im gonna try keeping with vho's). so you know which way im voting.

isnt there a standard 150 that is 30 high and 24 wide? i think that the size you are thinking of would be a much better option. id reccomend checking out a 120 gallon tank thats already setup if u havent already, because its suprising how deep(horizontally) they are. just a suggestion though.

I had a 150g reef and the front to back was just not enough. I have a 300g coming in Feb and the demensions are 96x30backx24 high 3/4" acrylic. I flip floped the standard dimension 300g 96x24x30.

Wider is better, more room to aquascape and you dont have to build the rock up the back wall.

i'm thinking now of doing a custom 54x30x24, this works out to about 170 gallons approx. i think the extra 6' length will be nice and won't require me to do 3 400w MHs rather than just 2.

I thought 60x28x28 would be a perfect size- but I couldn't get it from oceanic and didn't want to do the Inter-american route.

why cant you get that size from oceanic? how do they decide what custom tanks they can do and which they cant?

i decided to stay at 48" long, so now it's down to either a 48x30x30 or a 48x30x24. this weekend i'll be going to look at a 48x24x30 so that way i can decide if i want to go 30" high or if 24" is enough. i know i want to go 30" front to back, no matter what, because i want to do some elaborate aquascaping.
