blue xenia

i have the chance to order a coral under.anthelia blue xenia :lol:
has anyone seen a blue xenia ,...
any response would be great.

hi.
Most so called blue Xenia is just X. elongata from the IndoPacific. It is by far the most common Xenia in the hobby.

In case you never see one, it is not blue, but under actinic light, the whitish "hands" will give you a bluish appearance. Other names are tree Xenia, IndoPacific Xenia, pumping Xenia, etc.

I have never seen "blue" xenia that is actually blue.

It does exist, and other xeniids (efflatournaria, cespitularia and heteroxenia) have blue morphs, but I have never seen one in person.

What I have most often seen listed as blue xenia is a creeping xeniid that I could not positively identify as xenia or anthelia. It is usually brown or reddish brown, and does not pulse.

I have also seen what some folks call "bali" xenia listed as silver tip or blue xenia. Again, never anything close to blue.

Good luck, and if it is really xenia and really blue, I want some!

blue xenia really dont exist. there are blue corals that look like xenia and something considered "blue xenia"

I agree and disagree with the earlier posts.

The blue xenia I have experience with is usually a pom pom variety. Grows very large fluffy polyps. Tend to be more feather like. Blue? Not really. When the lights go out they tend to close up. As they compact down, they take on a blue/gray hue. However, once fully expanded they become a pinkish fleshy color.

They are a beautiful coral. But like all xenia. Grow like weeds, but do not creep (again, I am only speaking of the pom pom variety). One stalk tends to split down the center creating 2 and so on. Eventually you get a large cluster.

I had a huge one for years. But one day during a spring temperature spike, it melted.

If you have pictures, I think it would help.

Another reason not to go by common name if you can help it. Besides, there is a bunch of people, including me, who call a horse a dog without realizing the mistake.

There is a blue morph of the species Heteroxenia. You can see a photo of it on page 249 of The Reef Aquarium Vol II. Also on page 248 there is Cespitularia infirmata,which has the common name blue xenia. It is also somewhat bluish. It's photo is on page 247.

it is a tranship from jakarta.

Scientific corals got theirs from me. I traded Noel several years ago. If their site is still up, go to the hobbyist picture section and there is a nice picture of the mother colony before the melt down.

this Xenia is blue is color, but the camera pic does not show this.

The white wall behind my tank is blue when the actinic is on, but that does not means that the wall is painted blue. For the "blue" xenia, the light interaction is a bit more complicated that just reflection of the color of the illlumination, but my guess is that there is no xenia that has a blue pigment in sufficient area.

Maybe I just not seeing enough xenias yet.
