I've noticed in the past few weeks that the filter media in the Tetra filter, which hangs on the back of my nano reef, is for a better word, "Clogging Up!"

My question, since I know there's much needed good bacteria growing in there, can it be removed and washed or replaced? Would it be possible to do it in steps, remove one filter cartridge and then another at a later date?

The tank itself has a lot of beneficial bacteria within it, but I'm not sure what damage I would be doing to the bacteria content within the aquarium. Thanks!

hi.
Use the old aquarium water from water change to risen the pad. Tap water will kill the bacteria. So put some old tank water in a clean bucket, put the pad in there and shake it around to get the particles out, shake the water out of the pad, and replace it back into the filter.

I used to use AquaClear filter in freshwater tanks. Use two separate sponges, and while I wash one of them, the other one still have tons of bacteria.

My 29gal has a dual Penguin on it with the crushed gravel substrate. I have pulled the filters from time to time and looked at them. But there is never any build up at all. They are home to lots of shrimp and I suppose it is they that are keeping them clean. I was told that this would happen, so I would have been surprised to find that yours is clogging up. Could be a difference in the bio-load. Do check to see if there are shrimp in the filter and when you do clean the pads, do so carefully.
