I want to paint the back of my tank blue. I was wondering if anyone can provide me recommendations of the exact color to use or type (enamel, latex, etc). Once the tank is installed in the wall, it will not come back out, so I need to make sure I use the correct shade of blue. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a specific Sherwin Williams Paint number??

Thanks!
Joe

I just posted a thread about a week or so ago in regards to blue or black, what color to people prefer. You may want to look it up. I just painted mine and I used a Rustoleum Metallic Blue and faded it into Krylon very dark (don't remember exact color) Blue at the bottom. It looks REALLY nice. I would just use spraypaint and paint the position the tank so the back is on top and flat if you can, that way you have no runs. Use 3 really good coats. Good Luck!

From what I have read, spraypaint. It won't give you brush strokes that you would be able to see. From my experience, I would definitely recommend using spray paint.

Rustolium works realy well. I've painted three tanks now all with rustolium ( three coats) and they have been perfect. You can choose your color at the store people like different things. I prefer black because it shows off the color in the tank realy well. I used a small sponge roller. No brush marks or anything. If I did it again I would use black and mix in a touch of blue for a midnight look.

I used black spray paint for my 29g ! One day I was at my mom's and she wanted the back of her fresh water tank painted so I looked around the garage and found left over blue paint that I brushed on, dried horrible, but whan I gave it a second coat it evened out very nicely ! It looks very nice... No brush stroks at all... It was a Latex bathroom paint. I would go with any method you find easiest !

I am going to cut a piece of plexi to fit the back of my tank, and make sure it sits between the upper and lower trim. I am going to velco it to the back of the tank, putting the velcro behind the overflows. This way, I can change the color if I don't like it. We'll see if it works.

The very best paint for painting glass is a sign painter's paint. (like they use for windows) We use a brand called Sign Painters One Shot in our store. It is amazing what one coat of this stuff is like. It brushes on and comes in different shades of blue and black. We have painted hundreds of tanks with this stuff and if you ever use it once I can guarantee you will look for it next time you need to paint a tank. Any sign shop should have it or a similar brand. It goes on better and stays on better than any other paint we have used.
