Im looking to upgrade my reef to a 200 gallon glass tank (84x24x24), and I would like to have it drilled out for a Closed Loop System when I order that tank.

My questions are:

Would drilling out glass tank weaken it?

What is a safe size hole I can go with ( I would like 1.5" holes)?

Does anyone have a large glass tank that has been drilled out for CLS, lets hear your exp with it?

Would it be safer to use acrylic instead of glass?

Thanks for any input you can help me with!

You wont have to worry about weaking the glass once you drill it for CLS the only issues are chips around the hole once drilled but rarely have i seen a tank crack from that but have. If you are setting up a 200g glass tank i would have it drilled by the maker before you get it. Its a pain once the tank has been made. Warranty is also a issue so i would have it all done at the manufacture. I would close loop my tank in a hear beat. The size holes varys on the type of bulkhead you choose. I would purchase the chosen bulkhead and then have the tank drilled. I have a 150g tank and have my euro bracing has drilled out holes ..i cant live without them,.

ist question. you will not weaken your tank at all !

2. i'v had 50 mm holes x2 in my base 1 each corner which will give you 40mm pipe work. The base is only single in the wier at 15mm the rest of the base is then 30mm. The wiers measure up at 9inch right angle with a comb of acrylic to finish off. these have no differculty in handling the 11,000 ltr's+ of water returned from the sump 1x 6500 ocean runner 2x eheim 1060's@ 2280ltr's each
3/ acryllic tanks i believe to be more popular over with you dont khow enough about them to comment..GT s. wales
