Hello everyone,

I hope that I am posting this in a correct spot. I have had terrible outbreaks of ick and have heard some positive things regarding some preventative advantages of UV sterilizers, but have no idea which kind to buy; there are so many brands. It will be for a 75 G, FOWLR system. Does anyone have any recommendations, please.

thank you
kj

The Aqua Ultraviolet with Wiper works well. They all should work effectively, but some sterilizers have more features or durability. I've only used Aqua, Clearwater (not sure if it's around anymore), and Rainbow. For all I can tell, they all worked equally well.

In regards to Ich outbreaks, I've found that temperature swings really aggrevates the situation. My tangs used to battle bouts of ich until I installed a chiller. Thereafter, Ich has never been a problem. Salinty swings may be a factor too if you don't top off regularly. Forified nutrition (selcon, zoe, garlic extracts) can also make for a healther fish. A healthy, unstressed fish can generally ward of diseases effectively and/or cure itself when sick.

If you have space for a quarentine tank, I would just use the money that you would spend using a UVS for a 2nd tank for quarentine and a refractometer. By quarentining and treating with hyposalinity, you will not have parasites or additional expenses again.

I really do not believe UVS do much except burn a hole in your pocketbook, but that IMO.
