I've had a maroon pair for about 8 months now in my 30 gal. They're on a 12 hour light cycle. They share the tank with a caribbean pygmy angel. Water params are: salinity 1.026, temp 78, ph 8.30, ca 390, alk 8 dKH, nitrate 0. I feed them with formula 2 daily and live brine once a week. The female is about 4", the male is 1.5". I think I've been pretty patient but damnit when are they going to mate?? Any tricks anyone can share that induced spawning?? Thanks!

Have you tried soft music? Maybe some sexy videos from the Discovery Channel?

Just kidding of course. I think some more patience is all that is called for here, and maybe more variety in their diet. 8 months really isn't that much time, especially if they were immature when you got them. I can't remember exactly how long it took my last breeding pair to get busy, but it had to have been closer to 24 months (although they were not maroons).

My current clowns have been in place for nearly a year, and it is obvious now who the mamma is, but it hasn't gotten any further than that.

Good luck and remember, don't pressure the young couple. :)

I had that same problem with true percs... Mine was a bit different in the sense that one large female was added almost 2 years ago, and smaller juvinile was added about 8 months ago. Everyone told me that they would kill each other and chances are they would never mate if they did tollerate each others presence.

I picked up Joyce Wilkerson's Clownfish and she suggested increasing the light cycle among other things... I switched to a 10 hr cycle, started mixing up their food a bit, and BAM !!! Spawned !!

Her book is awesome, I'm sure everyone here will agree. Their are alot of tips for "reluctant spawners" in there... I'm sure it will help ! Good luck !

My Maroons also just spawned- eggs at least. I have had them for about 18 months. I also just got "Clownfishes" and it is a good book.

Good luck and be patient. After all, they can live 15 to 20 years if you have the luck to keep a stable system!

I had the opportunity a few months back to purchase a pair of ocellaris clowns from Joe Lichtenbert who is mentioned in Joyce Wilkersons "Clownfishes" book. He's a local breeder of a # of different clowns and has a very impressive setup for his clown breeding and I was lucky enough to get to see it as well as get a tour of it. One point he made very clear to me was that don't be surprised if the clowns I buy don't mate for a long time if at all. It takes more than just putting a pair together for them to mate. So I would say just be patient and provide them a enviroment which is as stress free as possible.

I got my Percula clownfish in 1997 and they didn't start to spawn until mid-2000. It takes a while.

My Avatar to the left shows the female when I got them. It's not that I got baby clowns. They were already at a decent size.

Try to feed them Mysis shrimps with selco. Many of my fish spawn with this food plus flakes and home made food. Clowns are mainly meat eatters.

Thanks!! I ordered the book today and I'm going to start feeding formula one and prob. some flake also. The tank at the university here in Davis that Rob Toonen used to take care of has a pair of breeding ocellaris clowns. The caretaker suggested that a dim light on a night timer caused them to start spawning, sort of like a simulated moon. Anyone try this?? I suppose a refugium on a night cycle would accomplish this..

I forgot to mention that, I added a night light also. Not sure what exactly triggered the spawning.... Night light, food, light cycle, ect. Wont hurt to try, I dont think the fuge lighting would work, where is the fuge??

It's under the tank next to the sump. The stand has an open back and I don't have any backing on my tank ( I think the plumbing looks kind of cool) so the light gets to the tank pretty well. It's reflected off the wall so it gives the tank a nice glow.

I think you're the first person I've ever met that thought the plumbing for a tank looks cool. While I don't want to see the plumbing of my own tank, whenever I see another tank, it's always one of the first things I look at. My wife and I went to the Newport Aquarium in Cincinatti a few weeks ago and I spent as much time looking at the plumbing (right before you leave you walk along this catwalk over their main shark tank and you can see all the filtration and quar. tanks in the back) as I did looking at the rest of the displays. My wife is a fish-geek, too, but she thought I was nuts for begging to go see the plumbing.

LOL it's always the first thing I ask to look at when in a new fish store, after a quick glance at the fish. If they made clear acrylic stands I'd buy one!!! I built so much of the equipment myself that it's hard not to be proud..

I'm with you wombat, I's love a clear stand. Here's the problem, It's easy to get the "WOW" affect from ppl looking at your reef. The only ppl that you might "WOW" about your setup is fellow reefers ! I could see it now, "Wow, he has such a nice aquarium, but what the H**l was he thinking about all that pvc...???" Plus, My wife would kill me ! :)

PC Cases are now coming with etched windows, neon lighting, ect... hmmm... might be a thought ! :?

I'm with Rich on this one. My clowns didn't start spawning until 18 months after I got them. They were not babies when I got them either.

They BOTH need to have mature reproductive organs before they can spawn.
