hi.
In the same theme, you will be surprised at how many nuclear reactors that the former Soviet dumped on the Northern Pacific.

Good that it is not easy to get these nice stuffs out of the ocean, otherwise, the FBI will have a fun time tracing where these stuffs came from after it was released in NY subway or something... (Dr. Reef, I send you a private message.)

Maybe if they allowed coral collection in this bay............ one; It might be better appreciated? Two, it would be better looked after {If no one looked underwater for three years there, then any thing could go on there? {dumped barrels} If I dumped toxic barrels in Tongas' bay{where coral collection takes place daily} the Islanders would kill any one harming their source of livilyhood! Once again this is a good example of how this hobby can protect reefs from harm? Also this 100 ton estimate is a little high? This would amount to about twice the tonnage of ALL other sources of Coral for this time period? from this ONE lagoon?{using CITIES Reports for this these years}This would mean one out of every two pieces of coral we bought during these years was illegal and from this one bay! Either this hobby is smaller then we think in regard to the World wide impact ........One bay out of hundreds in Hawaii can support half this hobby........or this whole event has been used and abused with regard to the TRUTH!

God forbid we actually elect politicians and officials we can trust. You know, the kind that will prevent environmental disasters like these from happening.

I'd much rather let people use a resource unchecked so they can stop offenders than have worthy people in charge in publich positions.

Kalk,

Just spoke to one of my best friends. He's doing research out there in that Bay for 3 months. He said they couldn't seem to figure out why the area is so devastated. Now they know.

So yes, they could tell.

It is close to impossible that any politician can enact laws to monitor every beach, reef patches...etc. Even if harsh fines are enacted, there are always pochers out there. What we need is education to all nation to prevent things like this.

There are always pochers hunting big games out of season, catching lobsters when they know they can't.

Ask your friend why he is there now and not five years ago, when it happened?{because no one noticed THEN } ............................And ask him why a reef not too far away ,which was covered in Lava five years ago{same time ago}and truley totally killed , is now almost 100 percent regrown and with much more diversity then before? Can it be that removing less then 1ooth of one percent of a reef with chisles { 100 tons of a 100,000 ton reef} can do more harm then totally blanketing 100% of the reef with molten lava ? silly. The damage done five years ago would be totally regrown by now{.even in a reef tank} The estimate of 100 tons this person is to have removed from this bay is 50 washing machine l size containers worth or > Ask your friend how many tons of coral are in the average 100` by 100` reef in this Bay? and how many tons get knocked off in a big storm? Then he should really feel silly.......

I don't think he cares. He studies bleaching and host-symbiont specificity, not aquaria trade.

Incidentally, the corals around HI are not the most decimated targets of the marine trade. According to the 30-40 professors at the summer long summit, the giant feather dusters are facing the highest collection rates, and the harvest has gone beyond sustainability in many coves.
