I have a 55 Gallon Show tank with the following small/medium size fish....

Wrasse Lunar
Blue Tang
Snowflake Eel
Porcupine Puffer

I want to add more fish and any other creatures that are compatible and will make my tank lucious.

Wow, I hope you have a 100 gallon sump under that 55 gallon tank. That is a monstrously huge bioload.

Well for a 55 Gallon Fish only tank what do you recommend if this is too much of a "bioload?" What do you exactly mean when you say too much of a bioload?

You input is appreciated.

Your friends are creating wadte which is turning into unwanted chemicals. These chemicals will kill your fish without massive skimming or sump. I wouldn't add anything else. Do you have any details on your tank. I.E. size, chem levels, skimming, sump, etc..

hello all, i'm new to the site here. great stuff!

however, i'm in complete agreement with sharky and jeff. as a matter of fact, i'd go a little farther and say that you need to either get rid of all but the eel or move them to a minimum (and this is a BARE minimum) 180gal sys. if you were my customer i would never have sold you all those fish knowing they were only going into a 55. (hey, i'm just that kind of girl...LOL!!)

i know, that is NOT what you wanted to hear, was it? i dunno 'bout anyone else, but i prefer truth to "what i want to hear", even if i do ask you, "do these pants make me look fat?"

I must disagree, to a point, with these responses. While the tank is definitely maxed-out bioload-wise, it is not majorly overstocked if the fish are indeed all on the small side, and they can be moved in the future if they get to the point of being too cramped. While the situation may not be ideal, it is not like he is putting a Tang into a 10 gal. tank or something else as crazy as that.

Dang...thats a heck of a hefy bio load for such a small tank.

I see major problems in the future.

Where do you guys get this from?! You don't even know what kind of filter he's running on the tank or even how large the fish are. Obvioulsy they will outgrow the tank, but there aren't enough facts yet to make a judgement! It's good to be conscious about overstocking but i think this is kind of ridiculous.

That said, what kind of filter is on this tank and how old is it?

i can't speak for anyone else here. i do speak from my own experience - personal, as someone who worked for years in the business, and what i see in the public aquarium where i'm on staff.

and, i don't know about you, but i tend to think a little more "long term" than just a few months. that's about all the time this guy's gonna have before he'll have problems, unless, that is, he plans on using most of his free time doing maintenance. most hobbyists don't.

that's where i get that from.

I am currently running CPR Backpak, AquaClear 500 and 150.
2 Coralife 24" 50/50 Bulbs
50lbs Live Rock
30lbs Live Sand

If I am to start over for a fish only tank what do you recommend for a community?

-Tom
i'd stay away from the large predatory fish, tangs (most get kinda big), and large angels. from there you have a few decent damsels, the smaller hawks, a plethora of dwarf angels, and really too many to list.

figure out what really catches your eye, learn about it, and go on from there. you already have your sys parameters, so that's going to limit your selection right there. honestly, some of the nicest sys's have something like a zebra moray and a snowflake (if you like eels, and i do), or are "dedicated" to certain types of fish. have you got any books or subscriptions to magazines to help you sort out what you like?

You'd be hard pressed to crash a tank with 50 pounds of LR, a skimmer, and 2 HOTB power filters in a few months with those fish provided he feeds correctly. It's all well and good to get fish into a bigger tank, and i'm a huge proponent of that, but honestly, who's going to set up a 180 for a lunare wrasse?! I agree that these fish would be more appropriately housed (mainly the puffer and tang) in a 6' tank, but i disagree with the notion that the world will end in a few months with them in a properly filtered 55. That's all!

As for fish selection, all the fish that Seamaiden listed would be good choices. An excelent guide would be Marine Fishes by Scott Michael, you can just flip through to a fish that catches your eye, and get a yea or nay tank size compatability on the spot, as well as more detailed info on it. That would be a great place to start, but it never hurts to ask! Let us know what happens.

Fish, like humans, will manage in a crowded space for a while, but to thrive they need clean water, plenty of food and room to move.

The more fish in a tank the more difficult it is to make everyone comfortable, so adding another tank or returning some fish is simpler and better in the long term.

the problem here, monkeyboy, is that he wants to add MORE fish, he's not asking "how is this set up now?"

also, that puffer, if it really thrives (and they don't need the best conditions to get some serious growin' on yer ash) is going to very quickly dominate the tank. the tang, if properly fed, will quickly pollute the tank. he is talking about a 55, after all.

i learned long ago one of the nicks for the lunare, and it is "dickhead wrasse" for a reason (and have you ever seen one of these guys full growed?).

After reading everyones post I am re-thinking my current fish community.

I am thinking about trading in my lunar and keeping the snowflake eel, puffer, and blue tang. Do you think this would be sufficient for a setup?

What is the typical fish community for a 55 Gallon Fish Only Tank?

I'd trade in the blue tang as well.
Tangs need a lot of room to zoom around, plus they are often incompatible with puffers.

Well if I trade in the recommended fish then I will be left with a snowflake eel and a juvenile Puffer. What other fish / critters can I add with these 2 fish in my 55?

a friendly recommendation for the future-when considering stocking levels, use the adult size of the fish as a guide-not how big it is when you purchase it.

Just so you understand, puffers and eels, regardless of their size need to be fed relatively large quantities of food often in order to thrive. The blue tang (is it an atlantic tang or pacific, also known as hippo tang or regal tang) can get as big as a dinner plate. Full grown, this fish will have difficulty turning around in your tank (the fish full grown will be longer than your 55g tank is wide) and the 4' length is not really long enough for the fish to roam and to exercise sufficiently.

I have seen atlantic blue tangs in the wild. They are constantly on the move (unlike many species of reef fish which stick to a small territory) and roam relatively large sections of the reef. It is an amazing sight to behold, a school of atlantic blue tangs criusing the reef wall. These fish are beautiful, but need ample room, IMO at least 180g.
