i have a 250 watt 10.000 k m.h bulb
i need to replace the bulb

can i use the same reflektor to 250 watt 13.000 kelvin or 20.000 kelvin ??

Uhhh the socket reflector won't make any difference, however you will need to get a new ballast.

Please don't tell me changing the bulbs to different temp. needs a different ballast because i am using 6500k and just ordered 2 10,000k bulbs. Why can't the same ballast work if the wattage of the bulbs are the same?

The kelvin change will not matter with the ballast. Now if you went from a 400 watt bulb to a 250 watt bulb, then you would need a new ballast. Otherwise, you'll be just fine.

Hope this doesn't seem patronizing, but in case you didn't know...

13,000 and 20,000 is only the COLOR temperature.
Temperature of the bulb *F/*C should be about the same.


If you had a bulb burning at 20,000 Kelvin, that sucker would be burning at about 35,000* Fahrenheit.
I'm afraid that you'd need more than a new reflector to contain that BAD BOY! 8) :wink:

Not directly. What Tom (MickAv8r) meant is that the 20K 250W bulbs do not fire reliably on a standard ANSI M58 ballast. You need an HQI ballast for these bulbs (ANSI M80).

still not the propper ballast.. what you really need is a ballast with a pulse start capacitor... Not an HQI

FYI - HQI ballasts have an ignitor, just like a pulse start.

PS ballasts are often recomended by the manufacturer to run the Ushio or AB 10,000K bulbs and they do help in starting these bulbs more reliably than a standard magnetic ballast without an ignitor.

Per the manufacturer's spec sheet, the ballast for the 250W 20,000K bulb is the M80, which is an HQI.

coupla things..
1. I think the recommendation of the M80 was closet US ballast that could meet the European egnition standards.
2.Are you saying they suggest driving the bulbs at higher temps causing premature lamp failure?..which the HQI seems to cause
3. All the European bulbs fire for a longer period of time with a PS ballast.
