Dear Julian-
first, thanx for your very interesting article on plenums.in the article you state:
There is some explanation for this of course, so my testimonial is not simply in support of a mysterious phenomenon. The plenum provides a layer of water that maintains a level of dissolved oxygen above zero. Therefore the gravel in Jaubert's system is sandwiched between the highly oxygenated aquarium water circulating above it, and the plenum water, which maintains a low but generally stable level of dissolved oxygen.

could you please provide a link with how the levels of O2 were measured, and what they were?(and whether or not they remained constant?)

a more general question i have is also-what are the actual relative dissolved O2 levels required/favored by the various types of bacteria? i.e.-at what point does an environment favor the development of anoxic bacteria,as opposed to aerobic bacteria, vis a vis the O2 level present?

the main reason i ask is that in this ever continuing debate, i have yet to come across scientifically based data to justify the assertion that either way functions better, or more efficiently, by either side of the debate coin, or an actual comparative measurement of both systems in real time setups, either plenum, or dsb.

if you know of any results/tests around(from Dr. Jaubert, as well)-i would greatly appreciate any input you could offer.

best regards.

Dear Vitz,

Charles Delbeek has done some interesting work on this at the Waikiki Aquarium, and showed variation in oxygen and other stuff in the water in the plenum. Jaubert's references listed in the article may also describe observations and methods regarding water quality measurement.

It is not just environment favoring bacteria. Bacteria also affect environmental parameters, and so perpetuate their own existence.
The bacteria are also facultative- able to live in different conditions. They may perform differently then depending on where they are located in the gravel bed, due to the oxygen level.

I did not write the article to be a vote one way or the other in a debate over whether plenums were better. I was merely sharing my experiences and defining the system and variations on it.

Sincerely,

Julian Sprung

Thanx Julian,
fwiw-I did get from your article that you weren't necessarily 'stancing' on the debate, but rather relating your success w/the method, and explaining it-made good reading.

btw-at a 'backer' show around '97-you had a cassiopea jelly in a bowl set-up w/ a halide at your booth.i'm really curious-have you kept 'em this way for any extended period of time?(thought it was a neat idea 8).
regards,
vitz
